Job Description
Responsible for skilled and unskilled labor in the Public Works Water and Sewer Department. Performs routine duties, alone or as part of a crew. Operate pumps, motors and related equipment at pumping stations and treatment plants. Use chlorination and chemical feed facilities to add chemicals to the water system. Operates motor equipment used in the repair, maintenance and operation of water and sewer system facilities. Operates a variety of generators at emergency stations to provide emergency stand-by water service. Install, paint, maintain, flush and repair the fire hydrants. Install, repair and read water meters. Performs light maintenance and servicing of equipment. Maintain pumping station buildings and grounds, plow snow, cut brush, cut grass and clear fire hydrants. Perform road and street maintenance connected with water and sewer system operation. Operates vehicles providing a roadway snow removal, plows municipal parking lots and schoolyards. Assist in emergency highway repairs and in other public works related emergency repairs as required. Provides overnight emergency on-call assistance in snow emergencies. Operate specialized and heavy equipment such as backhoes, excavator, jackhammer and other Public Works vehicles. Keeps daily records of amounts of water pumped, chemicals used and weather conditions. Collect water/sewer samples for submission to the DEP and transport samples to the laboratory. Provide information and assistance to service customers on the Town water and sewer system.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma
Must have a Massachusetts Class 1 Distribution or Class 1 Treatment Drinking Water Supply Operator’s License
Valid CDL Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
Strong work ethic and ability to read, interpret and apply data, drawings and instructions for assigned work
Must be on call for any water and sewer emergencies (i.e. snow and ice storms, hurricanes, broken water mains, etc) Valid Driver’s license
Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer’s License preferred
Asbestos removal license preferred
Backflow license preferred Hourly position eligible for overtime, on-call, and weekend duty pay. Salary determined by experience and relevant certifications/licenses.
