Lead Water and Sewer Operator Pearlington Water & Sewer District Pearlington, MS 39572 Job Summary The Pearlington Water & Sewer District is seeking a skilled and experienced Lead Water and Sewer Technician to oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of the District’s water and sewer systems. The Lead Technician will ensure the delivery of safe, reliable, and efficient water and wastewater services in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This role involves supervising a small team, performing technical duties, and responding to emergencies to maintain system integrity and public safety.
Key Responsibilities System Operations and Maintenance:
o Oversee the daily operation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution and wastewater collection systems, including pumps, valves, meters, and treatment facilities. o Conduct regular inspections of water and sewer infrastructure to identify and address issues proactively. o Perform and supervise preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs to ensure system reliability and compliance with regulatory standards.
Team Leadership:
o Supervise, train, and direct a small team of technicians, ensuring safe and efficient work practices. o Assign tasks, monitor performance, and provide guidance to ensure high-quality service delivery. o Foster a collaborative and safety-focused work environment.
Regulatory Compliance:
o Ensure all operations comply with Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH), and other applicable regulations. o Maintain accurate records of system operations, maintenance activities, and regulatory compliance documentation. o Assist in preparing reports for regulatory agencies as needed.
Emergency Response:
o Respond to water and sewer system emergencies, such as leaks, breaks, or equipment failures, including after-hours and weekend call-outs. o Coordinate with other departments, contractors, and emergency services to resolve issues promptly.
Customer Service:
o Address customer inquiries and complaints related to water and sewer services in a professional and timely manner. o Coordinate with other District staff to resolve billing or service disputes as needed.
Inventory and Equipment Management:
o Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies necessary for system operations. o Recommend equipment purchases or upgrades to improve efficiency and reliability.
Reporting:
o Give monthly reports to the Board of Commissioners, including updates on operations, maintenance and personnel matters.
Qualifications Education and Experience:
o High school diploma or GED required; additional technical or vocational training in water/wastewater systems preferred. o Minimum of 5 years of experience in water and sewer system operations, maintenance, or a related field.
Certifications:
o Must possess valid Mississippi Water Operator Certification (Class C or higher) and/or Wastewater Operator Certification (Class I or higher) as required by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and Mississippi State Department of Health. o Valid Mississippi driver’s license required; Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
o Strong knowledge of water and wastewater system operations, including pumps, meters, valves, and treatment processes. o Proven ability to lead and supervise a team, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. o Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical and electrical systems. o Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics. o Familiarity with safety protocols, including OSHA standards and confined space entry procedures. o Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure, especially during emergencies.
Physical Requirements:
o Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds, working in confined spaces, and standing or walking for extended periods. o Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and respond to emergencies outside regular business hours. Work Schedule Full-time position, typically Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime, weekends, and on-call duties as needed to address emergencies.
Compensation and Benefits Salary:
$55,000 – $68,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
