Job Description

Brunswick County Public Utility is currently accepting applications for aChief Utility Plant Operatorto join our 211 Water Treatment Plant (WTP), located in Southport, North Carolina at 4305 Southport-Supply Road SE. Brunswick County’s 211 WTP is a 6 million gallon per day (MGD) drinking water facility that pulls water from the Castle Hayne Aquifer. The facility utilizes lime softening, up-flow clarifiers, sand filtration and chloramination for disinfection.

Under limited supervision, the Chief Utility Plant Operator performs specialized skilled work related to Brunswick County water treatment facilities and related appurtenances. Work involves the operation of water treatment plant process and related equipment, and coordinating the work of plant operations personnel involved in the operation and maintenance of the Countys groundwater treatment plant, including

  • Assisting with safety procedures, standard operating procedures, and coordinating required training required for operations and maintenance personnel
  • Collecting and testing water samples
  • Controlling mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and chemical feed systems associated with the treatment process
  • Making flow rate changes, chemical dosing changes, running jar tests, and providing overall high-quality drinking water to Brunswick County
  • Delegating after-hours emergencies and repairs to the water treatment plant
  • Assisting in the preparation of a variety of reports and maintaining records related to treatment plant operations.

The Chief Utility Plant Operator must exercise initiative and independent judgment in completing assignments. The Chief Utility Plant Operator will also be required to sign as Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) or Backup ORC as required. Reports to the Water Resources Superintendent. If you are an experienced water operator ready to take the next step in your career, wed love to hear from you!## Education and ExperienceAssociate degree in biology, chemistry, or water resource technology AND seven (7) years experience in a water treatment facility, including four (4) years of experience at a facility with the equivalent classification of the 211 Water Treatment Plant; OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities

  • Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver License required
  • Possession of Grade A Well Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification issued by NC-AWWA is required
  • Grade I Maintenance Technologist Certification issued by the NC-AWWA, and/or Physical/Chemical Grade I Certification issued by the State of North Carolina, or the ability to obtain within the probationary period.

Physical RequirementsMust be physically able to operate personal computers, related office equipment, and motor vehicle. Physical demand requirements are for Medium Work.
