Job Description

TheWater Plant Dewatering Operator provides operational, technical and maintenance support for the Citys water treatment facilities.

To carry out our mission and continue to provide the safest and best drinking water to our community, we are seeking a skilled Water Plant Dewatering Operator devoted to providing operational, technical and maintenance support for the City’s water treatment plants.

About Us:

EMJ Dewatering (Press) Facility solids production averages 70,000 pounds per day. The Press facility is equipped with 3

  • 2meter presses that typically operate 10-12hours each day.

Solids comes to the press facility via the water treatment process; sedimentation basin draw offs and filter backwash water. The thickened sludge is pumped from the 4 gravity thickeners to the sludge holding tanks, then to the belt filter presses for dewatering. The dewatered cake is disposed offsite, and the belt press filtrate is routed to the city sewer. The recycle basin effluent is treated using ultraviolet (UV) disinfection and recycle pumps send it to the raw water line. For operational flexibility all recycle water can also be sent to the West Reservoir or the city sewer. EMJWTP maintains the permit for National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) outfall into an unnamed tributary to Honeycutt Creek; however, it is not typically used.

Work Hours:

This position requires the ability to work 12-hour night shifts including weekends, and holidays and will additionally assist with emergency events such as ice/snowstorms, hurricanes, and so forth. The Water Treatment Plant is a 24/7/365 operation. At times, the Operators shift may fall on a holiday and will earn 2.5X OT pay.## Duties and Responsibilities

  • Utilizes Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to regulate plant flow, chemical doses, control pumps, and to monitor pH, turbidity and chlorine levels; adjusts maintain levels within standard operation range
  • Operates Dewatering equipment which may include Belt Presses, DAF, monitors equipment alarms and maintains tank levels
  • Performs plant area and equipment inspections of equipment; detects pipe leaks and monitors chemical flows and chemical tanks; changes feed systems and chemical pumps as needed; remotely monitors booster pump station equipment, as assigned
  • Performs laboratory analysis and microbiology testing for process control and compliance purposes; verifies chemical levels; verifies accuracy of SCADA on line meters
  • Operates tandem dump trucks, rubber wheel tire loader, gathers samples and performs measurements
  • Reviews, enters and maintains data in laboratory information management system; maintains daily logs, reports and assignment-related documentation; reviews inventory levels and schedules deliveries of inventory as needed
  • Attends team meetings and safety training.

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED and three years of maintenance experience OR An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
  • Physical Chemical Grade-1 and C Surface Certification, or the ability to obtain within 2 years of hire
