Job Title :
Wastewater Lab Technician Company :
Solution Group The laboratory technician is responsible for performing laboratory procedures to determine wastewater quality. The technician is also responsible for learning operations of the plant and aiding operators when needed. This position reports to the Lead Operator and is subject to all regulatory requirements set by the state and federal government. Occasional weekends and holidays may be required.
Duties to be performed:
Performs routine chemical and biological analysis of samples, in accordance with approved state and federal protocols, SOP’s, and standard methods Performs testing in relation to the Facility’s NPDES Permit, process control and sludge management requirements. Routinely cleans of glassware and disposes of samples upon completion of testing Completes chain of custody and sends samples off for analysis Learns operations and aids operators with projects and the plant Oversees operation of facilities during respective shift to meet all applicable regulatory requirements and in accordance with design criteria Helps develop and implement techniques and methods of process control which increase plant efficiency Remote monitoring and control of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Assists in oversight of others contracted to work on components Completes tasks as assigned on preventative maintenance program Complies with plant safety and risk management programs for operators and contractors on site, in accordance with plant policies, procedures, or requirements Executes equipment repair or replacement such that effluent quality limits are maintained Completes lab bench sheets and data entry into computerized spreadsheets Assists in drafting and finalizing Standard Operating Procedures Collect samples and preserves them in accordance with Standard Methods Assists the Lead Operator in routine housekeeping duties and laboratory inventory control Provides support of lab analysis and operations during weekends, holidays and emergency situations, and Attend meetings with site contacts and provide on-site contacts with plant updates and status when needed
Required Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge of and ability to apply policies and procedures Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, inspection, repair, and installation of wastewater treatment plant components Knowledge of the mechanical, biological, and chemical processes involved in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant Knowledge of the occupational hazards in wastewater treatment plants and safety measures to be implemented Knowledge of and ability to apply principles of sound management and budget Ability to operate and maintain equipment used in the wastewater treatment process Ability to recognize needed repairs Ability to perform, analyze, and interpret laboratory tests for the purpose of making operational adjustments Ability to deal effectively with people at all levels Ability to read and interpret engineering specifications and drawings pertaining to plant expansions and improvements Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language
Required Training and Experience:
This position requires a minimum of a High School Degree. An Associate Degree in laboratory science is preferred, and some experience in the operation and maintenance of a Wastewater Treatment Plant is desired. Other combinations of experience and education, which provide the knowledge and skills required to perform the job, may be considered. It is expected that the person filling this position will pursue an Industrial Class A or greater Wastewater Operators License within the first year of employment.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills:
An understanding of fundamental computer skills Previous experience using Microsoft Office for communications and reporting Previous experience performing and interpreting routine laboratory analysis in accordance with standardized testing procedures Previous experience with preventative maintenance software The ability to understand the concepts of the laboratory’s Quality Control/Quality Assurance Program and implement these concepts.
Additional Requirements:
Must be able to climb ladders, regularly lift weights up to 50 pounds, and work in a physically demanding environment Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug test Must be flexible and willing to work the demands of the department which are subject to overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays
