  • The Challenge
  • We are looking for a welder to join our Maintenance Operations team.

In this role, you will

  • Weld using acetylene and electric arc welding equipment and cutting torches to fuse metal parts in situations where weld strength is a necessity, such as in the construction or repair of steam boilers and high-pressure steam lines
  • Use your welding prowess to conduct a full scope of welding and fabrication including any welding process on any type or style of equipment owned by the State of North Carolina
  • Measure, calculate, and identify material and fixtures for different projects
  • Organize and lay out work plan for jobs
  • Participate in our Safety Program and help verify compliance through inspections on a regular basis
  • Assist staff in identifying hazards in our everyday work place and advise management on corrective actions needed
  • Inspect shop support equipment (forklift and trucks)
  • Assist with daily shop cleanup and examines tools for damage to ensure safe usability
  • Attend and participate in shop safety meetings and safety classes
  • Research new/better repair methods
  • Be actively involved in job cost evaluation for cost savings
  • Report project completion to the shop supervisor
  • Complete daily time card/other cost/time information related to assigned jobs
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities, in routine or emergency situations, as assigned.
  • What You Bring
  • Demonstrated knowledge of metal working and metal fabrication
  • Knowledge of the correct welding and cutting processes
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with little instruction or guidance
  • Ability to work from sketches/blueprints and follow verbal/written directions
  • Working knowledge of the principles and methods of acetylene and electric arc welding
  • Working knowledge of the heating properties of a variety of alloys and parent metals
  • Knowledge of welding tools and equipment
  • Ability to work from and follow verbal and written directions and drawings, and to copy/reproduce broken parts
  • Strength to move relatively-heavy objects and perform manual labor for short times
  • A driver’s license and the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Education and Experience
  • High School/GED diploma, and
  • 2+ years experience in acetylene or electric arc welding; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
