JOB SUMMARY

The City of Birmingham is seeking a dynamic and experienced Public Relations Coordinator to lead strategic communication efforts that enhance the city’s public image and strengthen engagement with residents and stakeholders. This role is responsible for developing and executing comprehensive public relations strategies to promote transparency, increase awareness of city services, and foster public trust. The incumbent will create and manage multimedia content such as press releases, articles, and promotional materials, while also delivering public presentations to effectively communicate city initiatives. A key aspect of the role involves cultivating strong relationships with media outlets and community organizations to support collaboration and outreach efforts. The Public Relations Coordinator also plans and manages city-sponsored events, overseeing all aspects from securing venues and coordinating logistics to arranging entertainment and evaluating outcomes. In addition, the role supports internal communication by organizing training sessions and professional development opportunities for department staff. This position requires strong communication skills, strategic thinking, and a commitment to public service in order to positively shape how the City of Birmingham connects with its community.

QUALIFICATIONS

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

OPTION A

Driver’s license Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, Journalism or a related degree with at least 12 hours of coursework in Public Relations, Marketing, or Journalism Experience planning, implementing, and evaluating events (e.g., community fairs, public events, training sessions). Experience researching, implementing, and developing marketing campaigns (e.g., social media, grassroots, media buys, radio, television, signage).

OPTION B

Driver’s license Experience training, speaking, or representing an organization at internal/external events (e.g., trainings, community fairs, expos). Experience preparing public relations written messages (e.g., newsletters, press releases, speeches, talking points, flyers, online business-related posts). Experience planning, implementing, and evaluating events (e.g., community fairs, public events, training sessions). Experience researching, implementing, and developing marketing campaigns (e.g., social media, grassroots, media buys, radio, television, signage).

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES

Serves as a liaison between the organization, the media, and the public by delivering press releases and marketing materials that adhere to established branding guidelines, helping to shape and maintain a positive public image. Develops and edits multimedia content—including press releases, website articles, and social media posts—by collaborating with internal teams and stakeholders to ensure messaging aligns with the organization’s branding and strategic objectives before publication. Plans and executes events by managing logistics, identifying and securing necessary resources (e.g., venues, vendors, staff), and leading post-event debriefings to assess outcomes and improve future event execution. Manages media buys and marketing material procurement by researching vendors, drafting and processing contracts, and confirming that all deliverables are completed as agreed to support the organization’s marketing and event objectives. Builds and sustains partnerships with key stakeholders—such as community organizations, volunteers, and vendors—by identifying collaboration opportunities, preparing presentations and correspondence, and securing support for public relations and branding initiatives. Oversees departmental training coordination by identifying staff development needs, researching appropriate training programs, scheduling participation, and monitoring attendance and progress to support employee growth and organizational effectiveness. Develops and implements strategic public relations programs to promote a positive image of the agency to the public and stakeholders.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods. Job may involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is conducted almost exclusively indoors in an office setting and/or event space. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.
