About Us:

The Burlington Communications Center is a 24-hour a day, 7-days-a-week center. The center functions as a vital link between the City of Burlington’s and the City of Graham’s police and fire departments and those who need emergency and non-emergency assistance.

What you will do: Performs responsible telecommunications work by managing and participating in the daily activities of the communications center, within the city’s Police Department. This can be a sedentary position with rare physical exertion. It may require constant attention to multiple computer screens and phone systems.

Work is performed Monday – Friday during normal business. However, there may be some requirements for nights, weekends, and holidays if an emergency arises.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Supervises Lead Telecommunicators, part-time employees and assigns work schedules; trains new employees and organizes continuing education and training for all staff; Interviews applicants for employment, recommends which applicants to proceed in the hiring process to the Professional Standards Captain, conducts employee performance evaluations, recommends employees for promotions, approves leave, and signs employee timesheetsManaging and developing the budget for the sectionPerforms as the liaison between communication and patrol or other functions to ensure proper implementation of all required proceduresEffectively communicates in challenging situations with direct reports, peer supervisors (sworn and civilian), and managers/leadership for the department.

Performs payroll duties such as reviewing time cards, approving employee’s signatures on timecards, and entering time into the payroll systemAttends Executive and Supervisory Staff meetings and serves on various department and city committeesPerforms duties of telecommunicators during absences or emergencies.

Remains up-to-date on legislation affecting communications, stays aware of industry standards, trends, and developmentsDevelop policy and procedures pertaining to the section. Performs related duties as requiredCompile data from multiple resources to complete CALEA and/or departmental reports

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Work in this class is described as being sedentary and seldom requires much physical exertion to complete tasks.

Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.

Employee regularly operates a variety of machinery and equipment, including telephones, computers, calculators, copiers, facsimile machines, etc.

Work necessitates visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned in preparing and analyzing figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal viewing and extensive reading.

Employee may work rotating shifts which can cause fatigue from switching internal biorhythm clocks.
