Full-Time, Exempt, 12-month Position Summary The Director of Marketing & Communications at Brewster Academy leads the institution’s integrated marketing and outreach strategy to advance its mission, values, and strategic priorities. Reporting to the Head of School and working in close collaboration with the Senior Strategy Team, this role oversees institutional messaging, brand management, event strategy, and institutional research. The Director also provides visionary leadership and supervision for a multidisciplinary communications team and is responsible for aligning efforts across the Academy’s campuses and local and global constituent communities.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Marketing & Communications Develop and execute comprehensive marketing and outreach strategies that promote Brewster’s mission, vision, and institutional priorities. Lead annual messaging and communication planning aligned with strategic goals and performance metrics. Oversee the development and execution of a marketing communications plan across digital, editorial, print, and event platforms. Ensure consistent brand messaging across all internal and external communications. Serve as the Academy’s lead brand steward. Institutional Research & Market Intelligence Direct Institutional Research efforts, ensuring collection, analysis, and dissemination of data to support strategic planning and messaging. Contextualize findings with comparisons to peer institutions and Brewster’s longitudinal data to generate actionable insights. Partner with academic and administrative departments on data collection and reporting. Leadership & Team Management Lead, mentor, and evaluate a high-performing team: Editorial Director
- Oversees Brewster Magazine, internal and public-facing content, and media outreach. Director of Digital Communications & Engagement
- Manages Brewster’s digital strategy, social media, multimedia content, and alumni digital engagement. Director of Digital Content & Media
- Focuses on multimedia, email communications, and web presence. Special Events & Programs Manager
- Oversees planning and logistics for school-wide events, including admissions, advancement, and trustee functions. (Starting FY27) Digital Content & Media Manager
- Supports project and content execution across digital platforms.
Foster collaboration, set clear goals, and build capacity within the team. Vendor & Agency Management Manage and evaluate relationships with external vendors, including freelance designers, photographers, videographers, writers, and marketing/communications agencies. Ensure outsourced creative work aligns with Brewster’s brand standards and strategic objectives. Coordinate contract negotiation, timelines, budgets, deliverables, and quality control for all external contributors. Identify and onboard new vendors as needed to support evolving campaign and project needs. Events Strategy & Oversight Guide strategy and objectives for signature and institutional events. Oversee alignment of event experiences with marketing and advancement goals. Ensure event storytelling, digital promotion, and branding are consistently executed. Budgeting & Resource Management Develop and manage the Communications and External Affairs budgets. Monitor team and project budgets, approve expenditures, and evaluate cost-effectiveness. Recommend investments in tools, software, and services to enhance communication and outreach efforts. Cross-Functional Collaboration Collaborate with Advancement, Admissions, Athletics, Academic, and Program teams to ensure alignment between messaging, engagement, and recruitment goals. Lead regular meetings with the Marketing/Communications Team and broader communications groups. Serve as the primary marketing advisor to the Head of School and senior leadership. Institutional Representation & Reporting Represent Brewster at professional organizations such as CIRIS and within the Lakes Region community. Provide detailed reports and presentations to the Board of Trustees and school leadership on marketing performance, institutional research, and strategic progress. This is a full time 12-month exempt position with some evening and weekend responsibilities. Travel may be required for events and professional conferences. Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or related field. 8-10 years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and communications, ideally in education or mission-driven organizations. Proven leadership experience managing creative and high-performing teams. Deep understanding of brand strategy, digital engagement, and content development. Strong data analysis and institutional research literacy. Exceptional verbal, written, and visual communication skills. Experience managing budgets, vendors, and external agency relationships. Familiarity with independent school culture, especially boarding school environments, is preferred.
