BASIC FUNCTION

The Division of Small Business & Technology Development (SBTD) directs programs and initiatives across five subdivisions – Capital Access, NY Ventures, Entrepreneur Development, NYSTAR, and the Life Sciences Initiative – to support entrepreneurs, start-ups, innovation and technology development, and small businesses across New York State. The Assistant Director, Content Development and Strategy will collaborate directly with SBTD teams and the ESD Departments of Public Affairs and Marketing to develop tailored outreach strategies and materials to increase awareness and use of SBTD programming, particularly by specialized audiences or underserved constituencies.

WORK PERFORMED
  • Work with SBTD divisions to develop and draft outreach and marketing strategies to reach key audiences, with particular emphasis on the State Small Business Credit Initiative suite of programs.
  • Collaborate with SBTD divisions to develop storylines, social media content, one-pagers, website copy, blog posts, and other communication collateral that can be leveraged to raise public awareness and media interest in the work and impact of SBTD.
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, such as ESD’s Public Affairs and Marketing teams, on communications and outreach matters.
  • Establish and track metrics to evaluate content performance, engagement, and impact across digital platforms.
  • Create and maintain the SBTD editorial calendar regarding upcoming events/webinars, conferences, tradeshows, speaking engagements, and important social media or other “holidays” through which the division can raise public awareness through a direct presence and/or online communications.
  • Lead efforts on behalf of SBTD to update the SBTD web presence on esd.ny.gov.
  • Review, edit, and assist in advancing SBTD reports and related documents for public release or internal use, such as for briefing materials for ESD leadership.
Minimum Qualifications Education Level Required:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, Communication, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field preferred. Seven years direct relevant experience may be substituted for degree.

Relevant Experience Required:

5+ years of experience doing written communications work or writing in a related field such as journalism. Exceptional writing skills with the ability to craft a compelling, clear, and engaging story while maintaining a strong attention to detail. Experience generating content for social media or other key methods of public communication. Strong multitasker who can triage and move from one project to the next and stay organized while working with multiple stakeholders. Collaborative team player who can represent SBTD well to internal and external stakeholders and partners. Experience working for or in collaboration with government preferred.

Knowledge Required:

Layout and graphic design skills – familiarity with relevant software such as Adobe InDesign or related program(s). Experience with at least one program management and/or customer relationship management (CRM) tool. Experience preparing and uploading video content to social media platforms is a plus. The ideal candidate is a collaborative and strategic storyteller with experience writing, designing, and disseminating a broad range of communications materials.
