Job Description The Assistant Director of Language Services reports to the Director of Patient Relations and ensures responsive, timely and professional support for enabling patients and their loved ones to communicate in their preferred language or mode of communication. Responsibilities include managing all aspects of Language Services and supervising staff (Client Navigators Levels I and II). The Assistant Director monitors compliance with mandates regarding culturally/linguistically appropriate services and communication needs. Major responsibilities and assignments include, but are not limited to: Work Schedule
Oversight of Language Services
Schedule and deploy in-person interpreters for sign and spoken languages to communication needs of a vulnerable patient population, including deaf/hard-of-hearing individuals and those with limited English proficiency (LEP).
Provide and monitor access to over-the-phone and video interpretation.
Coordinate written translation at all stages: from agency quotes to delivery of final product to requestor while ensuring culturally sensitive, health literate, and quality translations.
Coordinate language assessment of clinicians, house staff and hospital staff and track results for Quality survey standards.
Represent Language Services to hospital personnel.
Maintain relationship with vendors and suppliers
Promote patient-centered care by tailoring services to individuals’ communication needs: interpretation in person, over-the-phone, or by video; in-person or video sign language for deaf patients and tactile interpretation for deaf/blind individuals; amplifiers and caption phone for hard-of-hearing patients.
Ensure quality translation of the patient’s bill of rights, pre-admission and discharge instructions, and other materials. Supervision and Evaluation of Staff
Provide direct professional and administrative supervision to client navigators delivering language services and operations support.
Evaluate and develop staff through annual reviews, professional development plans, and continuing education.
Ensure HR requirements for staff and professional development are submitted in a timely fashion. Oversee recruitment, hiring, and training of new personnel. Ensure staff wellness through regular communication, formal and informal, such as regular huddles and one-to-one meetings and by leveraging facility and H+H resources and programs. Policy Planning and Development
Develop and maintain policies, procedures, guidelines, and training for language program at NYC H+H/Bellevue.
Serve as consultant to H+H office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) on best practices for providing language services to H+H patient population. Review RFPs and evaluate vendor proposals of language-related

Minimum Qualifications • – Qualification for Central Office # – Qualification for Health Care Facilities 1. A Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in social science, social work, public health or other related field; and 2. • Four (4) or # three (3) years of satisfactory progressively responsible experience in the field of patient relations, public health, or social services in a health, social science, educational medical care or related agency of which at least two (2) years in an administrative, managerial, or supervisory capacity; or 3. A Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health, Health Advocacy, Public or Hospital Administration, Health Care Specialization, Business Administration or related disciplines; and • three (3) or # two (2) years of satisfactory progressively responsible experience in the field of patient relations, public health, or social services in a health, social science, educational medical care or related agency, including at least one (1) year in an administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity; and 4. Administrative and management skills, and good communicative, written and oral skills; or 5. A satisfactory equivalent of education, training and experience.
