Position Overview
The City of Decatur is seeking a Communications Coordinator to lead and manage communications for the Public Works Department. This role is responsible for creating and sharing content across the City’s website, newsletters, social media, and print materials. The goal is to ensure timely, accurate, and engaging communication about department services, projects, and initiatives.
This role requires strong writing and editing skills, creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines. Excellent customer service, collaboration with various stakeholders, and alignment with the City’s strategic goals are essential.
Key Responsibilities
Create and manage content for the Public Works section of the City’s website, newsletters, social media, and print materials.
Ensure information is accurate, timely, and aligned with City communication standards.
Respond to public inquiries and provide information about department programs and services.
Analyze social media and communication data to inform strategy and improve outreach.
Develop and maintain a photo and video library for department use.
Implement and track a department marketing plan in alignment with the City’s Communications Plan.
Collaborate with the Equity and Engagement Department to ensure inclusive messaging.
Assist with crisis and emergency communications as needed.
Attend public meetings, community events, and staff meetings to support communication needs.
Work closely with peer communication staff across departments.
Verify and proof content submitted for City-wide distribution.
Perform additional duties as required.
Skills & Competencies
Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, including grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
Experience writing for social media, websites, and marketing materials.
Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
Proficiency with digital communication tools and platforms.
Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to build strong working relationships across departments and with the public.
Knowledge of, or ability to learn, City of Decatur history, government structure, and branding standards.
Comfortable working independently and taking initiative.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, English, or a related field.
At least two (2) years of experience in communications, public relations, or marketing (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
Familiarity with local government is preferred.
Physical & Schedule Requirements
Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift (10-50 lbs.), and operate a City vehicle.
Regular use of computers, office equipment, and communication tools.
Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends.
