About the Agency
The Mississippi Department of Mental Health (DMH) certifies, provides, and/or financially supports a network of services for people with mental illness, intellectual/developmental disabilities, and substance use disorders. This position is in the Mississippi Department of Mental Health’s Division of Planning and Communications and reports to the Director of Planning and Communications. This position works within the agency on various internal and external communication efforts to help further the mission and goals of the agency. About the Position
This position will have a focus on coordinating and developing various multimedia assets used in communications and outreach efforts in the department, including social media graphics, brochures, informational documents or reports, and videos promoting services made available through the department. Duties include regular graphic design work with common programs such as the Adobe Suite and Canva, photography, videography, and photo/video editing as needed, handling regular updates to the agency website and intranet, assisting with planning and developing social media messaging, and other assignments as needed. This position also acts as a contact for partners involved in outreach campaigns, including both internal DMH employees and external stakeholders or partners. The position may also assist in writing and editing content used within the Division of Planning and Communications, or serve as a contact for media relations, or assist with public records requests. This position maintains contact and works with DMH Bureaus and Programs to identify and promote relevant information about services and activities through internal and external communications. This includes but is not limited to: services and activities at all DMH programs, recovery/resiliency activities, workforce development, alcohol and drug services, children and youth services, adult services, and partnerships and initiatives with other state agencies. This position assists and works with DMH Bureaus and Programs as needed to develop documents and distribute them through the appropriately identified channels. This position fosters relationships with advocates, stakeholders, and others.
What you’ll need to be Successful
Working knowledge of the Mississippi Department of Mental Health is a plus.

  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365.

Preferred Qualifications
Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 1-2 years of experience.

Agency preferred qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design, Marketing, or a related field and 1-2 years of experience. Preference will be given to those with:

  • Proven experience as a communications specialist in the fields of journalism, marketing, or public relations.
  • Experience in managing an organization’s social media presence is a plus.
  • Experience working with members of the news media and responding to media inquiries is a plus.
  • Experience presenting to groups or organizing outreach campaigns and initiatives.
  • Experience organizing press conferences.
  • Experience developing communication strategies.
  • Experience in graphic design, publication layout, and content production, including developing outreach materials like newsletters, brochures, and graphics.
  • Experience with web design and common content management systems, particularly WordPress.

Experience with filming, videography, and video editing skills.
