Position Summary:
The Communications Specialist at WUOT FM is a key member of the station’s marketing team, playing a central role in documenting, promoting, and amplifying WUOT’s programming, community engagement, and institutional impact. This individual helps plan and coordinate overall outreach, audience development, and community engagement strategies, as well as facilitate and execute events. Acting as both a storyteller and strategist, the Communications Specialist brings WUOT’s brand to digital life by producing compelling, multi-platform content that resonates with listeners, donors, and stakeholders across East Tennessee and beyond. The role also manages the station’s digital presence—including social media, email marketing, newsletters, and website content—and supports strategic communication initiatives. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, and a passion for public media and serving the community. The Communications Specialist reports to the Director of CCI Radio and receives daily operational direction and guidance from the Director of Communications and Marketing for the College of Communication and Information. Develop, manage and grow WUOT’s voice and audience through developing and posting engaging social content on existing and new social media channels.
- Monitor engagement and analytics to inform strategy.
- Coordinate email marketing campaigns (e.g., newsletters, donor updates) using platforms like Emma.
- Develop a pipeline of engagement from newsletter subscriber to member.
- Collaborate with programming and development teams to align messaging with station goals.
- Produce and edit digital content including audio clips, graphics, and short videos.
- Assist in creating plan and success metrics for developing new relationships and outreach to potential partner organizations; work cross-functionally to implement plan.
- Work cross-functionally to create community engagement events.
- Support planning and promotion of station events, pledge drives, and community outreach.
- Attend events as a WUOT representative and capture content for post-event promotion.
- Assist with listener and donor engagement efforts.
- Maintain and update WUOT’s website using WordPress or similar CMS.
- Ensure accessibility and SEO best practices.
- Coordinate with university marketing for online ad placements and digital campaigns.
- Design and produce print collateral such as brochures, flyers, event signage, and newsletters.
- Ensure all materials align with WUOT’s brand and university guidelines.
- Write and edit copy for promotional campaigns, underwriting materials, and public service announcements.
- Assist with drafting press releases and statements, coordinating interviews, and responding to public inquiries in the station’s general email account.
- Assist with other related duties as assigned. Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field.
- At least 1-2 years of work experience and demonstrated success in a communications role.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills for diverse audiences and platforms.
- Knowledge of public radio values and storytelling techniques.
- Skill in digital content creation, including social media, email marketing, and basic audio/video editing.
- Proficiency in design tools such as Canva, Adobe InDesign, and Photoshop.
- Familiarity with CMS platforms (WordPress preferred), Google Analytics, and SEO.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience in a communications role, preferably in media, nonprofit, or higher education.
- Knowledge of public radio.
Work Location:
On site in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Compensation and Benefits:
The anticipated starting salary for this position is $42,000 to $46,000 depending on the selected candidate’s experience, qualifications, and suitability.
