About Unity:

At Unity Environmental University we are on a mission to make environmental education accessible and affordable to all. Our unique model combines a functional hierarchy and project-based structure through our four Sustainable Education Business Units (SEBUs) to promote collaboration and innovation (Enterprise Education, Sustainable Ventures, and In-Person Education). We prioritize our students’ needs above all else, offering a variety of modalities, including in-person, and online. Our innovative and inclusive culture prepares students to tackle real-world challenges and cultivate the next generation of environmental professionals and leaders who can make a positive impact on our world.

About The Enterprise Model:

In 2017, Unity Environmental University pioneered a shift in organizational structure by embracing the Enterprise Model. This innovative model strategically segments the university into several Sustainable Education Business Units (SEBUs), each functioning with a high degree of autonomy. Designed akin to a matrix organization, the Enterprise Model combines the benefits of both centralized and decentralized management, enhancing the university’s agility and responsiveness to the dynamic needs of its students and broader societal challenges. This entrepreneurial framework fosters an environment where each SEBU operates as an independent entity, yet is interconnected with the university’s core mission. The SEBUs are empowered to develop specialized programs, services, and products that directly meet the unique demands of their specific audiences. Leadership within the Enterprise Model is both collaborative and authoritative; decisions are made efficiently at various levels, from the President to the Heads of SEBUs and Chief Officers, all incorporating feedback from relevant stakeholders. This model abolishes traditional silos and eschews the need for consensus, ensuring that no single entity can veto the decisions of another, thereby maintaining a streamlined and effective decision-making process. In this model, every faculty member reports to a Dean who oversees their daily work and performance evaluations.

Our Mission:

We are dedicated to delivering quality education and experiences that produce outstanding environmentally competent professionals and inspire individuals from all walks of life to steward sustainable ecosystems.

The Opportunity:

Unity Environmental University is seeking a forward-thinking Content Maestro to build and manage a next-generation content system grounded in clarity, adaptability, and institutional alignment. This is not a traditional communications or editorial role, it is designed for the emerging era of AI-enhanced workflows, cross-platform integration, and real-time content iteration. The ideal candidate is as comfortable navigating ambiguity as they are integrating emerging tools and insights. This role sits at the intersection of content, technology, and institutional change, with the mandate to create durable, defensible, and accessible content systems that serve real-time needs, not legacy habits. This role is designed with a growth mindset, while it will start with no direct reports, it is expected to evolve and may eventually include both direct and indirect reports. The individual must be comfortable with this evolution and understand that, as with all positions, the role may change or even end based on institutional needs.

Day to day responsibilities:

Create, edit, and proof high-impact content to ensure accuracy, defensibility, and alignment with institutional priorities set by others. Accept feedback, adjust direction as needed, and focus on delivering content that meets institutionally defined objectives. Conduct interviews, research, and conversations with internal and external stakeholders (in person, via Zoom, or by phone, etc) to gather context and insights for content. Identify appropriate platforms and channels for distributing and hosting content based on intended audiences and use cases. Collaborate with internal teams to ensure seamless distribution. Maintain timelines and coordinating cross-functional content releases. Develop systems and self-service tools that allow content elements to be updated efficiently, pulling from multiple databases when necessary. Apply principles of user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) to optimize how stakeholders interact with and consume content. Collaborate with internal departments to ensure that content is up-to-date, coordinated across platforms, and easily accessible. Review existing content to identify gaps or redundancies. Create or refine workflows, templates, and systems to allow for efficient content updates, including integration with relevant databases. Evaluate and experiment with emerging technologies including AI-powered tools to shape content systems that are scalable, intelligent, and responsive to user needs. Help define new norms rather than replicate outdated approaches. Challenge that status quo and champion a systems-thinking approach that prepares the institution for continuous evolution in a digital-first, AI-assisted landscape. Where appropriate, optimize content structure and distribution for discoverability. Travel as needed and maintain a regular on-site presence in alignment with institutional expectations. Do you have the skills? Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Information Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Digital Media, or a related field is required. Master’s degree in a related field is preferred but not required. Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in content strategy, content operations, UX writing, digital content systems, or a closely related area. Experience working across multiple content platforms or ecosystems (e.g., web, knowledge bases, portals, or databases) is required. Demonstrated success building or significantly contributing to institution-wide content systems or frameworks is strongly preferred. Proven experience in content strategy (research, planning, audits, governance) and UX/UI of content systems Demonstrated ability to follow direction, take feedback, and align deliverables with stakeholder-set priorities. Exceptional written and verbal communication, research, and editing skills. Experience with CRM or database systems like Salesforce (preferred). Adaptable, resilient, and comfortable with shifting priorities in a complex environment. Self-motivated, able to work autonomously, yet collaborative with cross-functional teams. Demonstrated curiosity and experimentation mindset with emerging tools and technologies, including generative AI, structured data platforms, or automated content systems. Ability to bridge traditional editorial instincts with future-focused content design. Ability to obtain a valid Maine driver’s license, and maintain a clear driving record. Ability to travel as needed. Are you thinking about applying but unsure if it’s the right fit? We encourage you to reach out anyway. We recognize that everyone brings different experiences and skills to the table. Take a chance and submit your application; you might be exactly who we’re looking for.
