The Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) is the state’s lead economic and community development agency. MDA recruits new companies to Mississippi, helps existing companies expand and provides support to foster growth and new opportunities in a variety of areas, including energy, small and minority business, trade, film, retiree recruitment and more. Additionally, MDA attracts millions of visitors to the state each year through Visit Mississippi, the tourism division of the agency. MDA also supports pass-through funding and provides support for a variety of grant programs and non-profits, such as Innovate Mississippi and Mississippi Main Street Association.
About the Position
This is a non-state service position. The Economic Development Team Lead will serve as the Marketing and Brand Manager for the Mississippi Development Authority. This position will be responsible for developing and implementing strategic marketing campaigns primarily focused on driving new business investment and economic growth across Mississippi. The Marketing and Brand Manager will play a key role in evolving MDA’s marketing and branding approach, including go-to-market strategy, tactical planning and implementation, digital optimization, measurement, as well as shaping, elevating, and managing Mississippi’s economic development brand and story. This role requires a strong business acumen, creativity, an eye for effective branding and design, analytical skills, and a deep understanding of digital channels, marketing trends, and best practices. The ideal candidate will be action-oriented, outcome-focused, bring an agile mindset and approach to accelerate output, and ready to take ownership of the role. Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Working closely with the Chief Marketing Officer to implement marketing strategy at a comprehensive tactical level with increased speed, frequency, output and with consistent pre
  • and post-launch planning, assessment, and measurement.
  • Helping to identify and determine how to effectively engage key influencers and vertical industry decision makers to create opportunities—leveraging market research, segment data, and behavioral trends to address specific needs and preferences.
  • Planning and supervising execution of tailored external marketing campaigns to support new business recruitment, foreign direct investment, and overall economic growth—focusing on the channel(s) that will drive the desired outcome most efficiently across owned and paid platforms.
  • Bringing additional focus, efficiency, and creativity to internal marketing efforts that support agency divisions’ day-to-day needs, collaborating with division leads to ensure alignment.
  • Optimizing and leveraging digital channels and platforms with more frequency, consistency, and purpose to expand audience reach and response, including marketing automation and customer journeys, paid digital, social media, vertical industry targeting, and website content.
  • Strengthening brand standards and serving as lead for ensuring identity, messaging, visuals, tone, and other elements adhere to guidelines and reflect overall brand strategy.
  • Helping launch an omnichannel approach to branding—evolving and adapting MDA’s content, design, campaigns, events, and experiences to convey Mississippi’s fundamental economic development brand, story, and value proposition more effectively and consistently, regardless of channel or location.
  • Playing a significant role in developing content plan and calendar, including strategy, voice, style, and creative approach for each channel. Co-lead tactical exploration of new channels and self-published media.
  • Building relationships with key stakeholders, including MDA leaders, government officials, local economic development and community organizations, and external agency partner.
  • Analyzing data and metrics to track campaign and channel engagement and effectiveness. Prepare reports on outcomes with insights to refine marketing strategies and tactics.
  • Monitoring trends and competitor activities to identify opportunities to innovate and drive deeper engagement and response.

  • What you’ll need to be Successful
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferably in public relations, marketing, communications, graphic design, or related field.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience, preferably as a marketing manager, brand manager, creative lead, or similar role with a focus on strategic planning and execution.
  • Private-sector, corporate B2B marketing, and/or agency experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organization, and collaboration skills to manage projects and teams effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communicator.
  • Experience with Marketing Automation platform, WordPress, Adobe Creative Cloud, and/or Google Analytics.
  • Photography, videography, and editing skills.
