JOBSUMMARY
Under the guidance of the AirMed Director of Safety andSecurity, our Operations Safety Officer works with companyoperational departments, base level managers, and employees topromote a positive safety culture and enhance operational andworkplace safety. As needed, this position conducts new-hire aswell as recurrent safety training. Functions within a SafetyManagement System Internal Evaluation Program (IEP) from a safetyassurance perspective. The Operations Safey Officer is a key teammember focused on communication and relationships to foster allaspects of safety support. This position also conducts eventinvestigations and provides recommendations to company leadershipfor improvement. The Operations Safety Officer helps to foster aculture of continuous improvement, recognizing opportunities forimprovement, and implementing new or improved safety processes andstructures, and ensuring effectiveness of system changes. TheOperations Safety Officer will have the opportunity to manage keySMS programs on a systemic scale. Resides in Birmingham, AL andreports out of the AirMed Birmingham corporate office.
ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS/DUTIES
Support the company’s and corporations Safety Management System(SMS) in all aspects. Conducts or supports investigation of accidents, incidents, andinjuries. Evaluates processes and activities utilizing quality managementprocesses to promote quality improvement. Identifies hazards, performs and assists with safety risk andchange management assessments. Conduct root cause analysis investigations and providesnecessary recommendations on reports received from the variouscompany reporting systems as assigned. Coordinates and works closely with clinical, operations,maintenance, and staff directors on a routine basis. Provide guidance to Base Safety Officers (BSO) on safetyrelated issues. Educate company personnel, and partners by communicating allaspects of corporate safety philosophy and initiatives. Measures company policies and regulatory compliance byconducting base audits, inspections, and evaluations. Assign and monitor Corrective Action & Preventive Action (CAPA)plans for unsatisfactory findings during audits, and safetyreports. Assist in the facilitation of systems risk management (SRM)processes, to include system hazard analysis (SHA) asnecessary. Participate in base and corporate level safety meetings andconference calls as required. Support operational leaders as a safety advisor. Analyze safety and quality-related data to identify trends,patterns, and areas that need improvement. Prepare reports andpresentations to communicate findings to management. Interfaces with certificate voluntary safety programs(ASAP/MSAP, FOQA). Works with the AirMed Director of Safety and Security, AMIOperational Excellence Program Manager, AMI Senior Management, AMIPresident, and staff to establish clear safety objectives andgoals. In conjunction with the AMI Director of Safety and Securitydefine methods, processes, and structure needed to monitor andreport on safety performance and meeting AirMed safety goals andobjectives. Assist AirMed managers develop and implement strategies tomitigate risks associated with operations. This may involverecommending changes to processes, equipment, protocols, supportstructures, etc. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships andopen dialogue at all levels of the organization to enable asustainable culture of safe operations. Collaborates to ensure compliance with 14 CFR Part 5 SafetyManagement System (SMS) mandates across all service lines to ensureuniformity, effectiveness, and ongoing relevance to the changingaviation environment. Maintains current knowledge of applicable regulations impactingair-ambulance safety and quality assurance. Works with the AirMed directors, leaders and staff to develop,revise, and maintain various safety manuals. Develop routine safety communications (safety alerts,newsletters, lessons learned, etc.) for AirMed widedistribution. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Associates degree; (bachelor’s degree preferred) or equivalentpractical experience. Associates degree or safety certification (aviation safetypreferred). Aviation Accident Investigation certification (preferred) orequivalent practical experience. Quality Management or Quality Auditing certification orequivalent practical experience preferred.
Experience:
5 years’ experience as a pilot; medical flight crewmember(flight paramedic or flight nurse); or A&P mechanic orequivalent. Prior experience in aviation safety, or specific and relevantaviation safety management experience and formal education. Organizational auditing experience (preferred). Experience in change management and quality assuranceinitiatives. Strong math and writing skills, ability to analyze data anddraw conclusions, strong analytical skills with proficiency in dataanalysis tools and software, public speaking.
Working knowledge and experience with:
Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) & HAZMAT regulations Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA)regulations National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) regulations. Quality Management Ability to analyze problems and develop solutions within thepolicies and procedures of the organization as well as state andfederal regulations. Intermediate to advanced computer skills in Microsoft Word,Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, PowerBi, and Access. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
WORKINGCONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Frequently required: standing, walking, stooping, grasping andrepetitive motions; sit, reach with hands and arms; talk andhear. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchangingideas by means of the spoken word; visual acuity is required forpreparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining theaccuracy and thoroughness of work and observing generalsurroundings and activities. Occasionally lift and move heavy objects. Specific vision abilities required by the job include closevision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depthperception, and the ability to adjust focus. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Work around machinery with moving parts. Specialized PPE may be required. Travel is required (via air travel or extended drive times inmotor vehicle). Must be able to read, comprehend, write, perform calculations,reason, and analyze. Occasionally required to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
