- 5 years of experience as a watchkeepingofficer in the maritime industry with a cargo/cruise line company.
1st Officer is a Licensed Watch Keeping Officer, and shall standhis/her own watch.
Responsibilities:
- Watch
- As a watch keeping officer, he/she shall have an understanding ofthe Safety and Quality Management program including theirresponsibilities in the safety organization according to theemergency plan and station bill.
- The watch keeping officer shall ensure that all safety, security,and environmental regulations are obeyed and that the alarm andindicator panels are under observation always. He or she shallensure that safety rounds are carried out in accordance with theMaster’s standing orders.
- The watch keeping officer shall report to the Master and/or StaffCaptain any significant events that occurred on his or her watch.
Important events shall be reported immediately, but he or she is toact on his initiative if necessary.
- Should the watch keeping officer find it necessary to give anorder to the engine room that would likely result in equipmentdamage as advised by the watch keeping engineer or the ChiefEngineer, the responsibility rests with the watch keeping officer.
The decision of the Master should be obtained if time permits. TheMaster is to be informed in any case. The time and details shall beentered into the logbook.
- Port
- In port, the watch keeping officer shall keep radio contact withthe security guards at the gangways. He or she shall regularlycheck that the gangway operation is free of problems.
- The watch keeping officer shall, from the bridge, supervise anyshifting of moorings and be aware of any important work in progressoutside normal working hours and whenever good seamanship dictates.
He or she shall be constantly alert for sudden strong winds thatmight affect the ship’s moorings. He or she shall notify the Masteror, if the Master is ashore, the Staff Captain at once and takecorrective actions as the need arises.
- NPP
- The watch keeping officer shall be familiar with and comply withthe Navigation Policy and Procedures, Standard OperatingProcedures, Master’s Standing Orders, and STCW.
Primary Duties:
- Reporting
- In carrying out these duties, the 1st Officer Navigation shall beaccountable on behalf of the Staff Captain for the care andcondition of the materials and spare parts associated with theequipment and systems within this area of responsibility.
- Stability
- The watch keeping officer shall also be prepared and fullycapable to make stability calculations, if so required by the StaffCaptain.
- Safety Training
- Furthermore, all watch keeping officers shall, in conjunctionwith the Chief Officer Safety, Security Officer, and other marineofficers, train the crew both in regular drills and in smallergroups to ensure that all crew are familiar with their duties inthe safety organization.
The training shall be organized in amonthly schedule prepared by the Chief Officer Safety and approvedby the Master and Staff Captain.
- Other Duties
- Attends meetings, training activities, courses and all otherwork-related activities as required.
- Performs related duties as required.
