Project/Unit DescriptionThe Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL)Systems Integration Division (SID) supports systems integration,system design, and product development projects for the Departmentof Defense (DoD) systems. SID research military systemsspecializing in avionics, electronic warfare, autonomous systems,intelligence systems, tactical communication/datalink systems; andlive, virtual, constructive training solutions. The SID team’sengineering roles include Systems Engineering, AlgorithmEngineering, Datalink Engineering, and Embedded SoftwareEngineering.

Job PurposeThe Division Chief Scientist helps directand oversees the division’s internal research and development(IRAD) program. The division chief scientist ensures IRADactivities will maintain and grow the division’s competitiveposition by: formulating and executing key elements of thedivision’s strategy, working closely with researchers and unitleads in the alignment of IRAD with other investments and awards,developing collaborations across other labs (Division ChiefScientists in particular), representing the division’sopportunities and challenges through reporting to the Lab ChiefScientist, and connecting with the broader research and sponsorcommunity.

This position comes with a Hybrid Work Requirement.

KeyResponsibilities Lead large, complex portfolio of research programs. Develop research in new research thrust areas. This requires deep knowledge of technology trends and trends inGovernment spending and priorities to identify new research areasfor development. Lead white paper and proposal efforts. Serve as point ofcontact throughout GTRI for collaboration with division. Manage division IRAD program and encourage strategic IRADs thatwill benefit the division. Attend industry days, conferences, serve on technical workinggroups. Encourage publication within the division.

AdditionalResponsibilities Oversee division IRAD portfolio, including financial oversight,technical oversight, and liaison with ASL Chief Scientist. Partner with division leadership to create division strategicplans, sponsor-engagement opportunities, and proposaldevelopment. Create technical plans to advance division core technologiesand capabilities and incubate new competencies. Coordinate with division chief engineer to ensure developmentprocess and tools support integration of new technologies intodevelopment lifecycle. Participate in the advancement of algorithms toward advancingsponsor fielded systems’ capabilities. Create plan to integrate modern technologies into divisionproduct lines. Support the ASL Chief Scientist by participating in the ASLApplied Systems Technical Council (ASTEC). Form strategic relationships with key subject matter expertsacross ASL, GTRI, and Georgia Tech. Engage with current and potential sponsors to advancecapabilities and capture new research.

Required MinimumQualifications Experience developing/designing complex, software-intensive,military systems using system engineering processes andmethodologies. Experience with advancing technologies and integrating thosetechnologies into product lines. Experience with Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations(EMSO).Preferred Qualifications Active Secret Clearance. Master or PhD degree in a scientific or engineering field. Experience developing data fusion, resource management, orsimilar algorithms use to integrate sensor and effectorsystems. Experience with the development and integration of machinelearning algorithms into trusted systems. Experience developing systems and software designs includingarchitectures, requirements, behavior allocation, and interfacedesign.

Travel Requirements 10% – 25% travel.
