POSITION SUMMARY

San Jose Catholic Church is a vibrant and multicultural parish seeking a dynamic Director of Music Ministry to lead and coordinate music for all liturgical celebrations. The Director is responsible for fostering full, conscious, and active participation in the liturgy through the selection of culturally appropriate sacred music and the integration of worship technology. This position plays a vital role in maintaining the musical and liturgical excellence of a diverse and faith-filled community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan and coordinate music for all weekend Masses, holy days of obligation, multicultural celebrations, weddings, funerals, and special liturgies. Direct and rehearse parish choirs, cantors, and instrumentalists. Organize and lead a children’s choir in collaboration with the Religious Education program. Collaborate with the Tech Administrator to oversee worship technology, including projection of lyrics and prayers. Recruit, train, and support volunteer musicians and tech assistants. Collaborate with the Pastor, liturgy team, and parish staff to ensure cohesive and meaningful worship experiences. Maintain and utilize music presentation software (e.g., ProPresenter, PowerPoint) and manage multimedia content. Ensure music licensing compliance (e.g., OneLicense, CCLI) and copyright adherence. Oversee care and maintenance of parish instruments and audio equipment. Create worship aids or booklets for special liturgies as needed. Organize and maintain the parish music library and manage the liturgical music budget. Participate in parish staff meetings and liturgical planning sessions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Practicing Roman Catholic in good standing, with a deep understanding of Catholic liturgy, doctrine, and sacred music. Bachelor’s degree in Music, Liturgy, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. Proficient in choral direction, vocal performance, and keyboard accompaniment (piano and/or organ). Experience with digital worship tools and presentation software. Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills, with bilingual fluency in English and Spanish preferred. Flexible schedule to be responsive to changing parish needs, including availability on weekends, evenings, and during liturgical seasons.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum of two years of experience directing music in a parish or diocesan setting. Experience serving a multicultural and multilingual community. Familiarity with Catholic liturgical documents and music planning resources. Ability to arrange and adapt music for multicultural liturgies. Working knowledge of sound systems and basic audio troubleshooting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office/365, Google Workspace, and design tools such as Canva.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to walk, sit, or stand for extended periods. Ability to climb stairs and lift/move up to 30 pounds. Manual dexterity for musical and technical equipment. Capacity to hear and see adequately to fulfill responsibilities. Physical and cognitive ability to perform all duties effectively and efficiently.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, vendors, employees, and the public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
