Purpose:
We are seeking a part-time Choral Director to oversee and provide quality support in all aspects of the traditional worship ministry at TLC, through effective planning and coordination with the pastors, the church staff and the worship planning team. Responsibilities A. To provide weekly musical support for the congregation’s 8:30am worship service and other seasonal services: 1. Schedule and direct the Chancel Choir, instrumentalists, special ensembles, or vocalists as needed. This includes coordinating with the leader of the “Dynamic Range” bluegrass ensemble, which leads the 8:30 service once a month, participating in the group, when needed, 2. Schedule and direct the Chancel Choir, instrumentalists, special ensembles, or vocalists for special worship services including, but not limited to: Advent midweek, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Lenten midweek, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, community Thanksgiving. 3. Provide vocal support/cantoring to the liturgical music and hymns, and by singing solos, when needed. 4. Coordinate with the pastors to select hymns, and appropriately selecting music that aligns with the theme and purpose of the worship service. 5. Organize, rehearse with, and conduct vocal and instrumental soloists, vocal quartets and/or small vocal ensembles. This is especially needed during the summer months. 6. Assist the congregation in learning new hymns and liturgical settings. 7. Collaborate with audio, lighting, and visual teams to ensure the technical aspects of worship during church services. This can include sound levels, stage lighting, and projection, enhancing the worship experience. 8. Provide supervision and work in collaboration with the church organist. Music selections should be given to the organist well in advance of the rehearsal and the performance. B. Prepare and rehearse the church’s choral groups, including the chancel choir and traditional choral groups. 1. Direct the Chancel Choir in regularly scheduled weekly rehearsals (August through early June) and schedule additional rehearsals as necessary for special services. 2. Direct or develop new traditional choral groups. This includes all rehearsals and services at which the group is singing. 3. Teach choir members pedagogically-appropriate vocal technique and choral methods that will enhance their vocal abilities and help them develop music-reading skills. 4. Prepare certain talented singers from the church choirs to perform solo songs for the morning service or special services. 5. Direct or obtain volunteer leaders for the various choirs or vocal ensembles based on the Director’s individual qualifications and skills. 6. Select, introduce, and teach music that varies in genre, style, level of presentation and appropriateness) for the occasion in which it is provided 7. Actively recruit new adult and youth members for the various choirs or vocal ensembles from within the church, or from the surrounding community. 8. Timely attendance (30 minutes prior to choir arrival) for scheduled choir rehearsals C. Administrative Duties 1. Encouraged to attend weekly TLC staff meetings (virtual or in-person). 2. Maintain scheduled office hours or times of contact. 3. Attend Worship Planning team meetings. 4. Provide input to preparing annual budget 5. Select and purchase music for organ, choirs, and other musical ensembles within the established budget. 6. Ensure that appropriate licensing for use of music live and via streaming are maintained. 7. Become familiar with the church’s extensive choral library and oversee the proper logging in of new music and the maintenance of the library. 8. Monitor the condition and tuning of the organ, piano, and other equipment used by music ministry. Report deficiencies and service requirements to the Worship team. Coordinate servicing. 9. Work with the pastors and office staff in the timely submission of music-related information for weekly bulletin and congregational communications. 10. Coordinate with the Leader of Contemporary Worship when the praise team is participating in traditional or special services, or when ensembles such as handbells are scheduled to perform in a contemporary service. Special Notes 1. Responsible for finding a supply choral director when on a scheduled absence. 2. Provide or coordinate musical needs for funerals and weddings, as requested. 3. May not take vacation during Christmas Eve, Holy Week, or Easter Sunday. 4. Encouraged to attend and host workshops, seminars, and retreats that will enhance the music ministry of TLC. Such efforts will not be considered vacation. The Continuing Education budget will be used to fulfill these endeavors. 5. Program seasonal concerts that showcase the various church groups, or invite singing or instrumental groups, or guest artists from outside the church to give a concert. 6. Assist with the music of Vacation Bible School, as needed. 7. Shall be permitted to use the church facilities for private music lessons. (The use of the facilities and equipment is considered in the compensation package.)
Job Skills & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Music with an emphasis in choral conducting or equivalent conducting experience preferred (minimum 2-3 years)
- Experience conducting a church choir or working with a community-based chorus and with singers of various musical skills and experience (minimum 2-3 years)
- Demonstrated vocal abilities and the ability to teach/train vocal and choral techniques
- Working knowledge of music theory, ability to read music, including the ability to transpose or reharmonize a melody and play the keyboard with some proficiency
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills, with an enthusiasm for choral singing, or church song and a passion for engaging the entire congregation through music
- Interest in and commitment to embracing Lutheran Church music and the liturgical calendar of the church
- The ability to select songs that are appropriate and relevant to the themes of the church year and the focus of the worship service
- An ability to work within electronic mediums: word processing, e-mail, tablets for digital music and music notation software, such as Finale or Sibelius, to transcribe music compositions, as needed
- A thorough knowledge of sacred choral repertoire music. Experience with resources for music, such as Sundays and Seasons, Prelude Music Planner, Augsburg Fortress and other music publishers
- Punctuality is requirement for all services, events, and rehearsal times and regular attendance at 8:30am Sunday worship is expected
- Ability to work with experienced and less experienced people in music ministry
