Job Description

This position is for a Director of Bands and Auxiliary Groups with an educational institution in Perkinston, MS.

Job Description:

Responsible for all activities including recruitment, planning, purchasing, budgeting, scheduling, and inventory related to MGCCC “Band of Gold.” This position reports to the Chair for the School of Visual and Performing Arts at the Perkinston Campus.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Plan, write, design, and produce music and routines for all halftime and pre-game performances; continuously develop and enhance the band program.2. Oversee all aspects of the halftime band show, including the timely purchase of music and related materials.3. Organize and oversee band-related activities such as auditions and Band Camp.4. Direct and manage all aspects of the band and auxiliary groups, including the Dance team, jazz band, pep band, concert band, winter guard, color guard, rifles, and marching band as assigned by the Dean of Teaching and Learning.5. Recruit prospective students and promote retention to maintain consistent enrollment from Fall to Spring semesters.6. Teach assigned courses in traditional and non-traditional formats (day, evening, weekend, online, and across campuses), ensuring full instructional time and adherence to curriculum standards as assigned by the Dean of Teaching and Learning.7. Oversee the design and delivery of instruction for band and auxiliary groups; coordinate classroom and performance-based learning experiences.8. Stay informed about available learning resource services relevant to the Fine Arts and provide recommendations for improvements to the Fine Arts Department Chair.9. Coordinate student classroom assignments that involve the use of materials and services within the Learning Resource Center, as needed.10. Supervise and maintain the band hall, practice field, instruments, vehicles, and equipment (including van, gator, and trailer).11. Manage all aspects of the Band of Gold (BOG) program, including student advisement, auditions, band camp, scholarship process, inventory, budgets, records, and file maintenance.12. Lead planning and execution of annual band events.13. Maintain accurate records for inventory, budgets, scholarships, performance plans, and student files.14. Manage the full inventory of BOG equipment and materials, ensuring a comprehensive inventory is conducted each Fall and Spring semesters.15. Administer the Band Scholarship process, including the timely submission of scholarship recipient lists to the Fine Arts Administrative Assistant to meet Financial Aid deadlines.16. Maintain oversight of the BOG program budget, making cost-effective and strategic purchasing decisions.17. Manage the BOG student club account, including planning fundraising activities and ensuring a stable and healthy account balance.18. Promote the band program through performances at parades, festivals, college and community events, and high school tours.19. Work collaboratively with the department chair on strategic initiatives, curriculum evaluation, student learning outcomes, and updates to syllabi.20. Support and improve teaching through awareness of student learning styles and continual pedagogical development.21. Participate in college service including departmental meetings, committee assignments, required professional development, and faculty responsibilities.22. Maintain required office hours, counsel students, and refer them to appropriate support services when needed.23. Foster strong public relations and represent the college in the community.24. Supervise Assistant Band Directors, including conducting annual evaluations.25. 26. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Department Chair, Dean of Teaching and Learning, or Vice President.

Mandatory Qualifications:

 M(1) Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning in music or music education with an emphasis in i strumental music with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in music.

M(2) Demonstration of successful achievements in designing and preparing contemporary marching band shows and parades.

M(3) Experience writing drills/shows.

M(4) Ability to arrange music for halftime performances.

M(5) Ability to teach applied music lessons in one or more of the following areas: percussion/brass/guitar.

M(6) Recruiting skills and experience.

M(7) Conducting concert band experience.

M(8) Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.

M(9) Familiarity with basic internet, e-mail, and word processing.

Desirable Qualifications:

D(1) Doctorate in music.

D(2) Teaching experience at community college or institute of higher learning.

D(3) Experience in teaching private lessons/ensembles.

D(4) Dance team supervision experience.

D(5) Experience in organizing band festivals.

D(6) Jazz Band and and Pep Band experience.

D(7) Full-time band director experience
