General purpose of position : Grace UMC is seeking a passionate follower of Jesus to contribute to the fulfillment of our mission and vision by planning and coordinating all musical activities for Sunday worship and other services throughout the year, recruiting & leading volunteer, guest, & paid musicians. The worship director will direct both the chancel choir and the contemporary music program and should be able to play one or more instruments, with piano preferred.
Supervision :
The Director of Music Ministries (DMM) reports to the Pastor in cooperation with the Church Council. The Council will provide an annual evaluation of the DMM’s performance. Responsibilities Consult with Pastor to select music for regular worship services and planned special services. Supervise and direct the Chancel Choir and contemporary musicians at all regular rehearsals (Wednesday evenings) and Sunday services. Coordinate music for all funerals and weddings. Procure and maintain all musical materials including church-owned instruments, piano, organ, sound equipment, and music charts for rehearsal and performance, in addition to keeping our CCLI license current. Offer advice, guidance, & training for musicians as needed, including warm-ups and section work (not including private instruction on instruments). Procure and supervise guest performers and/or substitute musicians, if necessary, within the constraints of the worship budget. Provide lyrics as needed for projection in worship. Notify Senior Pastor of schedule conflicts and file reports when necessary. Terms of Employment Qualifications Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Music or demonstrable equivalent experience in worship music. Knowledge of and experience in sacred music. Knowledge of and ability in musical instruments – guitar and piano strongly preferred. Candidate must be able to simultaneously sing and play an accompanying instrument like piano or guitar with a high level of skill, acting as featured performer when volunteers are not present. Skills in recruiting, directing, and leading music team and choir members. Must pass a background check and sign Grace’s social media policy. At least one rehearsal with the choir and the band, as well as one worship service, will be required in order to evaluate the candidate’s fit for our Grace’s music ministry. Vacation Five Sundays and rehearsal days are allotted for paid absences due to vacation, sick, personal or professional leave. Service cancellations do not count against this total. Absences in excess of allotted time will be unpaid leave and deducted from salary. Absences are to be coordinated with the Pastor. Pay for substitutes for absences (if necessary, up to the five allowed) will be paid for by the church, not counting against the music budget. Pay To be determined by the Church Council taking into consideration qualifications, job requirements and budget guidelines. Reviewed annually. Evaluation Evaluations to be conducted annually at the discretion of the Church Council. New employees will be reviewed after three months. Termination This is an at-will contract requiring two weeks’ notice from either the employer or employee for termination/resignation
