Director of Music and Organist Tryon Presbyterian Church, PC (USA) 430 Harmon Field Road, Tryon, NC 28782 The Director of Music will be a person of Christian faith who will build on Tryon Presbyterian Church’s history of musical excellence and innovation and bring enthusiastic leadership in worship music. This person will bring a diverse array of musical styles to the worship service and allow for the continuation of a strong musical legacy that spans the entire history of the church. Principal Functions The Director of Music oversees all aspects of the church’s music programs, plans and implements special music programs, and collaborates with the pastor in worship planning. S/he demonstrates a high degree of proficiency in choral conducting, organ and piano performance, sight reading, open-score playing, and improvisation. H/she is willing to work within the framework of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) order of worship. Music Program Music in worship is an offering to God. We value sacred music but also promote a wide range of musical styles in worship including spirituals, gospel, jazz, blues, classical music, contemporary worship music, and everything in between! Throughout its history, Tryon Presbyterian Church has seen the creation and performance of many new pieces of music by composers from all over the United States, ranging from more traditional choral anthems to longer, avant-garde pieces of contemporary classical music, all with enormous stylistic diversity. The choir consists of (on average) 20-25 members, ranging from accomplished musicians to those who love to sing but do not read music. The church has a Moller pipe organ with 19 ranks of pipes and 33 digital ranks, a Perzina baby grand piano, a harpsichord, full handbell/hand chime sets, an assortment of percussion instruments, and other pianos located in the fellowship hall and choir room. Job Responsibilities Works with the pastor to prepare and lead music for Sunday morning worship, as well as holiday and special services throughout the year Works with the church’s governing body to develop an appropriate music budget. Leads weekly choir rehearsals. Hired guest musicians as desired / needed. Oversees maintenance of the church’s instruments. Maintains music library, OneLicense, St. James Music Press subscription, and orders new music as needed. Attends staff meetings as scheduled (typically once a week or less) Works closely with all church staff members. Coordinates with Sound and Digital Ministry personnel and volunteers. Attends meetings of the Worship and Music Committee (currently meets once every two months) Will work to form additional music ensembles such as a handbell choir and children’s / youth choir. Position is for 20 hours per week with salary range of $22,000-$26,000 plus benefits, including healthcare, commensurate with experience. The Music Director reports to the pastor, who is the head of staff. Responsibilities Lead rehearsals and direct musical performances, ensuring artistic integrity and excellence. Develop and implement engaging music curriculum that educates and inspires students. Mentor musicians of varying skill levels, providing constructive feedback to enhance their abilities. Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff to promote a collaborative atmosphere. Organize and coordinate music events, including concerts, recitals, and community outreach programs. Select appropriate repertoire that aligns with the educational goals of the program. Evaluate student progress and provide guidance for improvement in musical skills. Foster a positive learning environment that encourages creativity and teamwork. Qualifications Proven experience in a leadership role within a music setting, demonstrating effective communication skills. Strong background in music theory, performance, and education. Ability to mentor and educate students across various age groups and skill levels. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. A passion for music education and a commitment to fostering student growth in the arts. Familiarity with various musical genres is a plus.
