Music Director Job Summary:
Collaborates with the ministers, organist and other music leaders to design and implement meaningful worship services at St. Paul’s Christian Church, through the inclusion of vocal and instrumental music that supports the message. Enhances the growth of the music program through an emphasis on recruiting and developing talent, teaching new songs and skills, directing singing, and supporting leaders of the handbell choir and praise band.
Responsibilities:
Direct the adult choir in leading hymns and singing anthems for the 11:00 am Sunday morning worship service every week. Select meaningful and appropriate hymns and anthems that reflect a variety of musical styles. Conduct weekly choir rehearsals, and develop the choir through recruiting new members, teaching musical skills, fostering a spirit of joy and support within the choir, and incorporating guest singers and musicians in worship. Facilitate congregational singing by directing hymns and teaching new songs as needed. Select music and direct the choir in singing anthems for occasional special weeknight services, including Ash Wednesday or Maundy Thursday and Christmas Eve. Plan and lead the choir in occasional special musical programs during worship that celebrate holidays, such as a Palm Sunday Cantata or an Advent Service of Lessons & Carols. These special Sundays are planned in coordination with the ministers. Oversee the maintenance of music library and equipment, including working with the church staff to schedule piano and organ tuning on a regular basis. Help secure substitute music leadership during vacation or in the event of illness. Collaborate with leaders of the handbell choir and praise band to arrange times for those groups to provide special music in the 11:00 am Sunday worship service or to work together on joint musical pieces with the choir. Direct children’s choir in singing an anthem for special services approximately two times per year (usually for the Christmas Pageant in early December and Youth Sunday in the spring). Participate in worship committee meetings as needed (typically 2 times per year)
Qualifications:
Experience and proficiency in directing a choral group Bachelor’s degree in a music-related field or actively pursuing a degree in music or music education Demonstrated ability to lead a group, command attention and work with diverse personalities, ages and cultures. Strong interpersonal skills and effective verbal communication. Ability to recruit and lead volunteers. Comfortable with a variety of musical styles, including both classical and contemporary music and traditional church hymns (or enthusiasm for learning a variety of music) and a willingness to help bridge cultural and generational differences by selecting a balance of musical styles for worship that will have multi-generational appeal. Enthusiasm for teaching and helping people develop their musical talents. Creativity and skill in working with singers of all levels and selecting appropriate music for the choir’s abilities, vocal range, and size. Familiarity with church culture and theology, and comfortable working in a progressive religious environment. Mental and physical fitness sufficient to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.
