The primary focus of the position is to promote musical excellence within the life of the congregation and to maintain the emphasis within the music program of the building up of the Christian life and faith in the wider community. Prerequisites

  • Previous experience in a similar position is desired, but not mandatory.
  • A personal commitment to the declaration of God’s Word through musical interpretation consistent with liturgical practices of the ELCA.
  • Have a broad knowledge and competence with all types of sacred music, liturgical settings, and accompaniment of group singing, including contemporary settings.
  • The Director of Sacred Music needs to have knowledge of playing St. Paul’s organ, including all capacities of the organ.
  • Reports to the Pastor and to Church Council or its designee for compliance with job performance. Performance will be evaluated annually. Duties
  • Responsible for directing performances and conducting all weekly rehearsals for the musical offerings of the Adult and Children’s Choirs (preschool, children, and youth) as well as implementing a hand bell choir. Choir Rehearsals are to be scheduled from the first week of September to the first week of June.
  • Responsible for selecting, ordering, and scheduling (in consultation with the pastor) of all choral music, organ music and music supplies. The director shall keep said expenditures in line with the approved congregational budget.
  • Responsible for maintaining neat and orderly files and/or library of music. The organ should be kept neat at all times. Be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the organ and pianos. The organist shall report to the Worship and Music Committee on the condition and maintenance schedule for these instruments.
  • Selects organ music in correlation with season and/or day of the church year. And in conjunction with the pastor, shall be responsible for choosing seasonally appropriate hymns.
  • Responsible for providing the parish administrator with anthem titles and composers by Wednesday of each week.
  • Responsible for providing prelude music for special services such as Christmas, Easter, and other services as agreed upon.
  • Anthems by the Adult Choir or special music should be offered at least twice a month, September through May, at each service. The first responsibility is the liturgy and hymnody. Additional music may be offered in the summer. Anthems by a children’s and/or youth choir should be offered at least once a month during September-May, with special attention to Holy Week and Advent/Christmas.
  • Provides organ/piano music for the following additional services during the year. o Mid-week Lenten services, including Ash Wednesday. o Holy Week services including Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Christmas Eve services. o Other festival services may be requested and considered on an individual basis.
  • From time to time, the director may be called upon to provide special music for congregational group meetings.
  • Provides special ensembles in worship such as brass, string, woodwind, and/or choral at least quarterly.
  • Assists with the Children’s Christmas Pageant.
  • Practices their craft regularly.
  • The director is free to use the resources of the church to promote the music ministry, St. Paul Lutheran Church, and the Gospel. (Facebook, YouTube, etc)
  • Will with regularity offer concerts and other opportunities for community engagement and involvement in the music program of St. Paul.
  • Provides music for funeral and wedding services held within the church as availability allows. If unavailable, the organist assists in securing the services of a substitute organist.
  • The director is responsible for the vision and future of the music program of St. Paul. This includes but is not limited to advanced planning and execution in continued and new musical opportunities for involvement with both the congregation and community of all ages.
  • The director of music will make themselves available and respond promptly to all communication from staff and members.
  • The director shall make every effort to motivate, inspire, and strengthen the Christian faith of all members.
  • The director is responsible for the ongoing recruitment of new choir members/instrumentalist as well the exploration and encouragement of God given gifts by the members of St. Paul and the Spring Grove community.
  • It is understood that the director must maintain a close working relationship with the pastor and the Worship and Music Committee. The director is expected to attend staff meetings as well as Worship and Music Committee meetings.
  • The director of music should have a good working relationship with the entire staff.
  • Vacation Sundays shall be taken in consultation with the Pastor.

Director is responsible for finding substitutes when on vacation.
