Overview:

Community United Church of Christ (CUCC) is accepting applications for the position of Interim Pianist and/ or Organist. Applicants with experience with additional instruments also accepted. With 180 members and a deep commitment to extravagant hospitality and social justice, the congregation celebrates a progressive Christian theology. Reporting to the Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Lacey Brown, the organist/pianistwill assist in crafting Sunday worship that follows the revised common lectionary and engages the hearts and minds of those in attendance. Based on worship themes chosen by the pastors, the organist/pianist will create an environment of reflection, reverence, and celebration. The pianist and/ or organist will work closely with the choir director to foster a ministry of inclusion and genuine community in the music program.

Description of Duties:

Select and perform the prelude, offertory, and postlude for one Sunday service at 10:30AM. The preludes, offertories and postludes should be appropriate both thematically and musically for the day, pulling in music from many genres, including but not limited to the standard classical repertoire, folk tunes, and music from around the world Play accompaniment on three hymns from the hymnals listed below, doxology, and on two short sung responses in the service following the passing of the peace and the children’s message On the second and fourth Sundays of each month provide accompaniment on an anthem, introit, and benediction response chosen by the choir director Play at twice-monthly Wednesday evening choir rehearsals at 7:00PM, except for during the summer months when the choir is on a break Make hymn singing an integral part of worship services, inviting congregational participation in creative and inspiring ways Arrange for other musicians to perform prelude, offertory, postlude or special music, and rehearse with soloists and guest instrumentalists as needed Assist with the completion and review of the weekly worship bulletins. Participate fully in special services as needed throughout the year such as memorials, weddings, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Christmas Eve, etc… Attend staff meetings once a month in person Have an understanding of music licensing of copyrighted music for broadcast

Yamaha studio, regularly tuned

Organ:

Allen Renaissance 3 manual. Current Hymnals The New Century Hymnal (United Church of Christ) The New Bluegrass Hymnal (United Church of Christ) More Voices (The United Church of Canada) Chalice Hymnal (Christian Church/Disciples of Christ) Others as approved by Pastor and Choir Director. Day-to-day operations On 2 and 4 Sundays, be at church by 9:30am to rehearse with choir for 10:30am service On 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays, be at church by 10:00am for 10:30am service Be at church by 6:45pm on two Wednesdays each month for choir practice of 1-2 hours, beginning at 7PM Submit each week to the draft worship bulletin the title, composer for each prelude, offertory, and postlude Notify pastor one week in advance of any guest musicians Mandatory Qualifications Deep understanding of the role of music in liturgical settings High level of technical proficiency of the piano and/ or organ. Additional experience with other instruments also accepted. Significant experience as a rehearsal accompanist, comfortable with reading open scores and supporting the choir director and the choir to be fully prepared for worship services Demonstrated ability to creatively integrate time-honored piano and/ or organist literature with the best of more contemporary genres Exceptional organizational and time management skills Ability to maintain a professional demeanor, to exercise mature judgment, and to be a dependable and flexible team participant Salary considerations: The salary, based on approximately 8-10 hours per week, will be fixed commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the applicant.
