Position Description:

Church Organist Job Summary:

Collaborates with the Music Director and Ministers to implement meaningful worship services at St. Paul’s Christian Church, by selecting and playing appropriate music on organ and piano. St. Paul’s has a two manual Schantz organ.

Responsibilities:

Play the organ and/or piano every Sunday during St. Paul’s 11:00 am worship service, including a prelude and postlude, offertory and communion music, 3 hymns and a choir anthem. (Year-round) Accompany the choir during rehearsal every Thursday evening, 7-8:30 pm and Sunday mornings before worship at 10:30 am, or at an alternate weekly rehearsal time when needed. (September through May) Select appropriate instrumental prelude, postlude, offertory and communion pieces for each week. Play the organ and/or piano for special worship services during holidays, including Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Christmas Eve.

Optional:

Play organ or piano for wedding and funeral services, with additional compensation. Coordinate with the Music Director and/or Senior Minister so that a substitute can be scheduled on dates when the organist is not available to play for rehearsals or worship.

Qualifications:

Experience and proficiency in playing the pipe organ and piano. Comfortable with a variety of musical styles, including both classical and contemporary music and traditional church hymns (or enthusiasm for learning a variety of music). Familiarity with church culture and comfortable working in a progressive religious environment. Flexible and able to work well with other paid staff and volunteer choir members. Mental and physical fitness sufficient to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.
