To provide support, both musical and administrative, to the Director of Music and Music Program of the Riverside Church.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
With the Director of Music, provides musical leadership for Sunday morning worship services. Serves as principal accompanist for The Riverside Choir Regularly accompanies The Riverside Choir for rehearsals and Services of Worship. Assists the Director of Music with auditions of members and prospective members. At the discretion of the Director of Music, conducts the Riverside Choir. In the absence of the Director of Music, provides musical leadership for Sunday morning worship services as needed. Shares with the Director of Music in providing musical leadership for occasional services (e.g., weddings, funerals, memorials, and ordinations). Shares with the Director of Music in providing and coordinating musical and administrative support (e.g., instruments, musicians, vocalists, rehearsal space, etc.) for the musical ensembles of the church The Inspirational Choir The Cherubs The Rising Voices The Youth Choir The Riverside Ringers The Youth String Ensemble and guest artists/groups Manages the administration of the music library oversees the cataloging and storage of existing and newly-acquired choral music. in collaboration with the Director of Music, directs volunteers working in the music library. communicates directly with the Director of Music regarding the needs of the Music Library and its volunteers.
Additional Musical Responsibilities:
Collaborates with the Director of Music in selecting music and providing musical leadership (as organist and/or conductor) for special services (e.g., Candlelight Carol Service, Christmas Eve Service of Lessons and Carols, New Year’s Eve Watchnight Service, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil, Thanksgiving Day, and other special services as required). At the decision of the Director of Music, may perform one or two organ recitals per year (e.g., New Year’s Eve, Annual English Hand bell Festival, Annual Summer Series of Organ Recitals). Serves as staff liaison for the Annual Summer Series of Organ Recitals, including greeting and assisting guest artists.
Experience and Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in organ, sacred music, or a related field. Experienced organist, service player, and accompanist. Choral conducting skills. Knowledge of a broad range of sacred music for worship that reflects The Riverside Church, is inclusive of various cultures and ethnicities, and reflects its international, interdenominational, interracial character. Proven ability to offer exceptional musical support and strong musical leadership. Demonstrated ability to interact in a collaborative manner with other ministries and staff. Excellent verbal and communication skills. A strong sense of attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy and thoroughness in all aspects of job performance, administrative and musical.
