JOB DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE

Special Lecturer of Collaborative Piano and Music Theory, McCall School of Visual and Performing Arts, Coker University

POSITION SUMMARY

The collaborative pianist is full-time (9-month), renewable position, beginning in the Fall 2025 semester (August 2025). The position requires a full-time schedule made up of day and evening hours focused on university events, including occasional weekend hours. Salary and benefits are competitive. The possibility of additional compensation, if desired, may come from teaching applied lessons in the Coker Community Music Program. The position reports to the Director of the McCall School of Visual and Performing Arts. It is essential that the collaborative pianist enjoys teaching piano skills and demonstrates their ability to play – and enthusiasm for – classical, musical theatre, and a variety of popular and other musical styles. This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate and experienced accompanist who is dedicated to teaching piano and music theory, to supporting the artistic development and expression of undergraduate students, and to developing and maintaining creative collaborations with faculty and staff.

PRINICPAL DUTIES

Teach a rotation of music theory and class piano courses (Foundations of Music Theory, Theory I, Class Piano I, and Class Piano II), in fall and spring semesters; plus occasional applied piano students;
Accompany rehearsals and performances (two choral ensembles, one opera workshop production, one ballet class), as needed each semester;
Accompany musical theatre rehearsals and performances, per the production schedule, across fall and spring semesters;
Accompany student juries, student recitals, occasional performances (tbd);
Accompany occasional music faculty recital(s);
Other duties may be assigned by the Director of the McCall School.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION
Essential:

Master’s degree in music (piano performance, collaborative piano, or piano pedagogy);

Preferred:

Doctoral degree in piano performance, piano pedagogy, or collaborative piano; or an advanced degree in a related field with applicable teaching and accompanying experience, preferably in a higher education setting.

EXPERIENCE

Teaching class piano, applied piano, and introductory music theory;
Applying a student-centered approach to instruction;
Sight-reading fluency;
Accompanying choral ensembles and singers in a variety of styles, including classical, musical theatre, and popular music;
Accompanying ballet classes, and musical theatre rehearsals and productions;
Working effectively with students, and voice and theatre faculty, to prepare juries, recitals, and a variety of performances;
Deploying excellent organizational and communication skills to support busy students and faculty, and to achieve creative stakeholder goals.
