Musician Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church 2637 S Hwy 17, Garden City, SC 29576 Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church Musician- Job Description Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church, located in Garden City, is an active and growing church, that was founded in 1975. We are a reconciling in Christ congregation, and recognize and include ALL individuals in our worship and fellowship activities. We are currently seeking a part-time musician to work in collaboration with our Music Director, our Choir, and our Contemporary Praise Band. With our beautiful Sanctuary and incredible team, we have ministry that is transforming lives and making an impact on our worship services. This individual will help lead our traditional and contemporary worship services, by using the organ, piano and electronic keyboard, to inspire the congregation with music in the praise of God. In Ephesians 5:19, we read “speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making a melody in your heart to the Lord,” tells us of the communal aspect of worship. This verse encourages believers to express their worship and praise to God through music, both vocally and internally; to encompass various forms of musical expression, including those inspired by the Psalms (scriptural songs), traditional hymns (songs of praise), and songs that are personally inspired or related to the Holy Spirit. It emphasizes the importance of music as a way to communicate with each other and with God. This position will assist the congregation and members of the music ministry to do just that.

Responsibilities :
  • In coordination with the Senior Pastor and the Music Director, assist in the selection of music for all Sunday worship services, at other worship occasions, and all special celebration of worship where the organ or piano is the primary instrument used.
  • Attend regular planning and development meetings with other music staff and pastor.
  • Accompany choirs and individual vocalists and instrumentalists as scheduled by the Music Director.
  • In coordination with the Pastor and the Music Director, assist in the selection of hymns appropriate which are reflective of the liturgical season and designated Scripture texts.
  • Provide organ music for weddings and funerals held at the church, when available. The use of the organ by another organist may be used only by special permission.
  • Inform Music Director of all absences and make recommendations when appropriate for substitutes.
  • In cooperation with the Music Director, make recommendations for the purchase of organ music within the approved budgetary parameters.
  • Notify the Music Director of issues related to equipment maintenance and tuning.
  • In cooperation with the Music Director, determine the annual budget requirements for organ and piano music.
  • Cooperate with all staff and musicians so that our music ministry is enhanced within the life of the church.
  • Seek professional relationships with other church musicians and keep abreast of developments in worship and liturgy through associations, continuing education, and professional church publications.
  • Attend rehearsals of Contemporary Praise Band and Church Choir.
Experience and Education:
Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music & Arts or other related/equivalent degree is preferred.
  • Prior experience in providing worship music within a Lutheran setting.
  • Knowledge of Lutheran worship tradition and a theological understanding of the church sufficient to appropriately select music and texts for worship.
  • Good organizational skills, flexible, and detail oriented.
  • Strong enthusiastic leader who can engage people and motivate volunteers.
  • Skilled in using technology for communication and planning.
  • Ability in wide range of styles of worship music.
  • Proficiency in keyboards, specifically pipe organ and piano.
  • Arranging, composing, and sequencing music a plus.
  • Experience with producing and directing special events, programs or musicals.
  • Experience with technical aspects of contemporary services: for example, sound boards, worship software, theater lights, video editing, etc. is desirable.
  • Satisfactory completion of a background check.

  • The Organist is a visible representative of Shepherd of the Sea, and therefore, is expected to witness by word and lifestyle the principles of the Christian faith and be a role model of Christian leadership.
  • Sense of Humor, Positive attitude, dependable, responsible, self-motivated, and creative with the ability to listen to and communicate with people of all ages and musical backgrounds.
  • Ability to work with volunteers and committees.
  • Ability to embrace and adhere to the guiding principles of Shepherd of the Sea.
  • Flexibility and creative thinking, in a growing church environment. Ability to work in a reconciling in Christ congregation which embraces people of all faiths/beliefs.
  • Skilled at researching music trends, issues and programs related to people in the congregation and community.

If invited for interview, candidate will need to perform at an informal audition. Three references will be needed from candidate.

Compensation :

Compensation for this position is $13,500 per year . This position carries no benefits. The starting date for this position is August 8, 2025 . This paid position shall not include personal volunteer hours for any ministry or small group within our church, should this individual choose to participate in any way. After 90-days, an initial evaluation will be conducted by Senior Pastor to assess performance and adjust the position description if necessary. The Personnel Committee will provide a review of the employee every year in November. The Personnel Committee is available for other meetings, if desired, at the discretion of the employee, the Senior Pastor, or the Personnel Committee. With a 30-day notice either the Employer or the Employee, may terminate the employment contract without cause or reason. At that time, any property, material, or assets belonging to the employer will be returned, and all materials and files will not be shared with any outside agencies, churches, congregations or individuals.
