Full-Time Job Summary:

The Animal Care Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily care, health, and well-being of animals in the shelter. This role ensures that all shelter animals receive proper care, enrichment, and medical attention while maintaining a clean and safe environment. The Animal Care Manager will also be responsible for strategic scheduling, staff training, safety, and ensuring that all animal care protocols align with the shelter’s mission and policies.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Scheduling & Team Coordination Develop and implement staff and volunteer schedules to ensure optimal coverage for animal care throughout the day. Coordinate daily responsibilities to balance workload and provide efficient care. Ensure adequate staffing for peak times, special events, and medical emergencies. Monitor workflow and adjust assignments as necessary to maintain high-quality care. Attend weekly administration and team meetings to discuss department. Weekly one on one meetings with the COO, led by the Animal Care Manager, where organizational initiatives, department financials, planning, and follow ups are addressed. Develop and implement performance management strategies to enhance employee effectiveness. Set clear performance goals and conduct regular performance evaluations. Provide constructive feedback, coaching, and development plans for employees. Monitor employee progress and address performance issues proactively. Support career growth through training and mentorship. Maintenance Oversight & Safety Implementation Identify and address maintenance issues within the facility, ensuring a clean and functional environment. Submit and track maintenance tickets for necessary repairs and improvements. Implement and enforce safety protocols to protect staff, volunteers, and animals. Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal animal welfare regulations. Conduct routine inspections and training sessions on workplace safety procedures. Morning Duties Oversee morning health checks and ensure any medical concerns are documented and addressed. Assign staff and volunteers to feeding and cleaning duties, ensuring animals receive proper nutrition and housing sanitation. Ensure all enclosures, kennels, and common areas are cleaned and sanitized according to shelter protocols. Review overnight reports and respond to any incidents or emergencies from the previous night. Coordinate any scheduled veterinary visits or medical treatments. Midday Duties Oversee midday enrichment activities, socialization, and behavioral assessments. Ensure all animals receive any prescribed medications and special dietary needs. Monitor shelter operations and provide support to staff and volunteers. Conduct ongoing training for staff and volunteers on best practices for animal care and handling. Address any behavioral issues or concerns by coordinating with trainers or behavior specialists. Afternoon Duties Supervise afternoon feeding and cleaning rotations. Ensure end-of-day checklists are completed, including final health checks and documentation. Prepare animals for potential adoptions, transfers, or medical procedures scheduled for the next day. Review staff reports, update records, and communicate any important information to the Shelter Director. Conduct final walkthroughs to ensure all animals are comfortable and safe for the evening.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Previous experience in animal care, shelter management, or veterinary assistance preferred. Strong leadership and organizational skills with experience managing teams. Knowledge of animal health, behavior, and enrichment best practices. Ability to handle animals of all sizes and temperaments safely. Excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays. Passion for animal welfare and commitment to the shelter’s mission.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Frequent standing, bending, walking, and handling animals in a variety of settings. Comfort working indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
