GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

An employee in this class performs a variety of duties associated with the care and maintenance of the animal shelter. Work requires that the employee keep animal containment areas clean and sanitized; encourage adoptions and reunite owners with lost animals; maintain the facility grounds; and ensure the safety and health of animals within the facility. Employee feeds and cares for the animals housed in the shelter, but must also euthanize animals on an as-needed basis. Work also requires the employee to maintain supplies and equipment and necessary records. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Animal Control Officer and is evaluated through observation and review of reports.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Cleans and maintains animal confinement area, cleans and disinfects cages; feeds and waters confined animals; makes routine inspections of animals and their cages to monitor health, safety, cleanliness of cages, etc.
  • Washes food and water bowls, shelter laundry, any shelter utensils and keeps facility sanitary.
  • Encourages adoptions of sheltered animals; assists interested parties in claiming or adopting confined animals, processing required paperwork, collecting fees and providing receipts, etc., as necessary.
  • Prepares and maintains records, such as numbers and classifications of animals confined, claimed, adopted, destroyed, etc.; files and retrieves material as requested or as otherwise necessary.
  • Maintains supply inventories, ordering material as necessary.
  • Performs and/or assists in euthanasia of un-adoptable or diseased animals, and decapitation of animals for the purpose of rabies testing. May be asked to dispose of dead animals.
  • Performs necessary weekend and after hours on-call work. May be scheduled to rotate weekends with other staff members to feed animals and clean Animal Shelter. During a county disaster or emergency, employee will be scheduled to work shelters to care for pets and abandoned animals, animal rescue, etc.
  • Work may require the occasional direction of helpers, volunteers, temporary employees, or jail inmates
  • Other projects and responsibilities may be added at Duplin County’s discretion.
  • Answers telephone and greets visitors; answers general inquiries and provides information concerning adoption of pets and lost and found animals or refers inquiries to appropriate personnel; dispatches animal control officers, as necessary.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Education:

Completion of high school and some experience in caring for animals, supplemented by additional training in animal control; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Training Requirements (licenses, programs, or certificates): Must be able to obtain Certified Euthanasia Technician (CET) certification within six (6) months from date of employment and Rabies Vaccinator (CRV), Shelter Technician Certification.

Experience:

Any combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

  • Working knowledge of breeds of animals to aid in identification of lost pets and know aggressiveness of various breeds.
  • Ability to maintain accurate reports.
  • Ability to build and maintain cooperative and effective public relations with the community.
OTHER INFORMATION

Special Information (Travel required, physical requirements, on-call schedules, and so on):

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
