Animal Care Technician Job Description As an Animal Care Technician, you will apply your technical knowledge to perform daily observations to check the health status of animals and report any changes in their environment. Your role will involve environmental monitoring and associated documentation, along with changing and cleaning cages, equipment, water bottles, and food. You will be responsible for unpacking and housing animals upon arrival and maintaining janitorial duties in facility rooms, including the stocking of supplies. Additionally, you will oversee the preventative maintenance of animal facility equipment and supplies, perform monthly sanitization of equipment and the facility, and maintain accurate records of animals, supplies, and equipment while ensuring supplies are restocked as needed. Responsibilities Perform daily observations to check animals’ health status. Report any changes in the environment and/or animals. Conduct environmental monitoring with associated documentation. Change and clean cages, equipment, water bottles, and food. Unpack and house animals upon arrival. Maintain janitorial duties in facility rooms and stock supplies. Oversee preventative maintenance of animal facility equipment and supplies. Perform monthly sanitization of equipment and the facility. Maintain accurate records of animals, supplies, and equipment; restock supplies as needed. Essential Skills Technical knowledge in animal husbandry and handling. Ability to clean and sterilize equipment. Experience in animal science and vivarium operations. Capability to perform physical aspects of the role such as standing for extended periods, bending, and twisting. Ability to work a demanding schedule, including overtime, weekends, and holidays. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience handling mice is a plus. Reliable and able to work effectively as part of a team. High School Diploma or equivalent technical certificate is required. Pursuit of Purina and/or AALAS certification at the ALAT level is desired and required after the first year of employment. A minimum of one year of experience in animal care is helpful. Work Environment The work environment includes several vivariums, each with its own team, and requires good teamwork skills, adherence to basic SOPs, and lab safety knowledge. You will typically work with 10-12 others on a first shift, starting as early as 5am. Flexibility for overtime is required. The role is deemed essential personnel, thus weekend and holiday work is required. The campus is accessible via public transportation with a free shuttle from bus/train stations.
