GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
Perform routine animal care and related duties at the Germantown Animal Shelter. The work involves cleaning and maintaining kennel areas, showing animals to prospective adopters, and housekeeping of the shelter area.
Note:
The Animal Shelter is closed to the public on Sundays but animal care must be provided. Flexibility in scheduling may be required during the week (start time 7:30am) with Saturday, Sunday and holiday work required. 15-20 hours per week. Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provide care for animals in the shelter including feeding, cleaning and monitoring animal behavior Clean and disinfect pens, floors and related areas according to established practices Provide assistance to customers wishing to adopt an animal; escort customers through the shelter, respond to questions regarding adoption procedures and pet availability and history Receive and inspect animals delivered to the shelter Monitor inventory level of supplies and notify supervisor accordingly Post shelter pets online using social media sites such as Petfinder, Adopt a Pet, and Facebook Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must be able to identify dog and cat breeds and sex of animals Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Ability to recognize signs of illness in animals Ability to lift and handle objects and animals weighing up to 50 pounds Ability to restrain and handle animals up to 150 pounds Ability to apply interpersonal skills using tact, patience, courtesy, and good judgment Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships Ability to adhere to assigned work schedule based on operational needs and demands of the shelter Must possess basic computer skills or ability to learn steps for posting pets online Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Equivalency to high school diploma and one year of animal care experience. Valid driver’s license required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Exposed to confined animals that may have diseases. May use hazardous chemicals in cleaning facility. Exposed to adverse environmental conditions, including fumes, chemicals, and solid waste substances such as animal feces, urine, saliva and blood. Part time employees are not eligible for a full benefits package, but may have limited wellness benefits.
