Position Summary:
New Jersey Ballet is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Wardrobe Manager to oversee all costume-related operations for the company’s performance season. This position requires exceptional sewing and alteration abilities, strong organizational skills, and a comprehensive understanding of ballet costuming. The Wardrobe Manager is responsible for maintaining the quality, cleanliness and readiness of all costumes and wardrobe elements, ensuring they support the dancers’ needs and the artistic vision of the company.
Primary Responsibilities:
Manage costume preparation, fittings, maintenance, cleaning, and storage for all productions and events. Perform advanced sewing, alterations, hand-finishing, and costume construction as needed. Oversee and carry out laundering and dry cleaning of costumes, ensuring proper fabric care and maintenance. Dye and maintain ballet shoes to match costume requirements. Maintain wardrobe inventory and detailed records of costume usage, repairs, and dancer measurements. Order wardrobe department supplies, including notions, laundry materials, shoes, and sewing tools. Work closely with costume designers and the production team to execute costume designs to a professional standard. Supervise and schedule dressers and wardrobe crew during rehearsals, performances, and load-ins/outs. Oversee quick changes, costume logistics, and backstage wardrobe operations during performances. Coordinate costume needs for school shows and community performances. Collaborate with other production departments to ensure smooth technical integration. Coordinate and manage costumes for New Jersey Ballet School performances, including student fittings, alterations, and performance prep as needed. Conduct fittings and costume maintenance for children maintenance for children performing in all professional productions (e.g. The Nutcracker, full length ballets).
Qualifications:
Minimum 3 years of professional experience in theatrical wardrobe management; ballet or dance experience strongly preferred. Exceptional sewing, alteration, and garment construction skills (machine and hand). Knowledge of fabric care, laundering, and dry cleaning processes. Experience with shoe dyeing and costume finishing techniques. Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to lift and carry costume bins (up to 50 lbs), climb ladders, and work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required. Proficiency in wardrobe-related tools and software a plus.
Compensation:
Compensation ranges from $950 to $1,250 per week, based on experience and qualifications.
