POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Staff Veterinarians, Lead Veterinary Technician, and Medical Administrative Manager, this role provides daily support to the Shelter Veterinary Technician team. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: feeding and cleaning animals in the medical area, safely restraining patients for examinations and procedures, administering routine and medicated baths, preparing lab equipment for diagnostic testing, and assisting with patient exams. The ideal candidate will also possess basic computer and data entry skills to accurately update medical records in the shelter management system (currently PetPoint). This position also offers a potential pathway to advance into a Junior Shelter Veterinary Technician role, based on performance, completion of training, and adherence to established guidelines.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide general care for patients in the medical processing areas, including feeding, watering, supplying fresh litter, and offering nutritional support for neonates. Clean and disinfect medical workspaces (e.g., Processing 1 & 3) and ensure a safe, sanitary environment. Safely restrain patients for procedures such as venipuncture, examinations, temperature checks, and sample collection. Assist in the preparation and use of diagnostic tools and equipment (e.g., IDEXX lab machine, fecal test kits). Perform routine and medicated baths or dips on assigned days. Observe animals for signs of illness or injury and promptly report concerns to the Lead Veterinary Technician and/or Shelter Veterinarians. Assist with the preparation and administration of medications, including subcutaneous injections, under the direction of the Shelter Veterinarian(s) or Lead Veterinary Technician (after training). Collect samples and perform basic in-house diagnostic tests (e.g., SNAP tests, ear cytology, skin scrapes), including interpreting results (after training). Perform intravenous blood draws for in-house testing under supervision (after training). Support daily recordkeeping by updating health logs and ensuring accurate medical documentation in the shelter management system (currently PetPoint). Monitor and help maintain inventory of medical supplies, medications, and equipment; re-stock as needed and report items for reordering. Report any safety hazards or misuse of equipment to ensure a safe working environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in animal science, veterinary technology, or a related field is a plus. Experience in caring for and handling animals (cats and dogs) in a safe, effective, and humane manner preferred. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Passion for animal welfare and a commitment to the organization’s mission. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and database management. Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings as required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Lifting and carrying animals and equipment over 50 pounds. Walking, standing, sitting for prolonged periods depending on the task. Frequent reaching, bending, kneeling, squatting, and stooping to care for animals and clean areas. Ability to work in environments that may involve handling animals, dealing with various animal medical conditions, and exposure to animal-related hazards.
