Full Job Description Job Description:
The Animal Research Technician provides animal husbandry and health care in accordance with experimental protocols, regulatory guidelines (Animal Welfare Act, NIH Guide), and company policies. This role also supports scientific research by performing clinical procedures, monitoring animal health, and assisting with data collection, while maintaining compliance with Biosafety Level 2 standards. The individual may be delegated leadership responsibilities and serve on site-wide committees.
Responsibilities:
- Provide daily animal care including feeding, watering, and enrichment.
- Maintain animal housing and facility sanitation in accordance with SOPs.
- Monitor animal health and report abnormalities to Site Veterinarian or Group Leader.
- Administer prescribed treatments and experimental articles under guidance.
- Perform animal restraint and handling for routine and emergency procedures.
- Collect clinical and biological samples (blood, feces, swabs, etc.) pre- and post-mortem.
- Assist in necropsy procedures including surgical dissection and data collection.
- Administer and monitor sedation and perform euthanasia per protocol and guidelines.
- Maintain accurate records: animal care logs, treatment sheets, study-related documentation.
- Perform maintenance and repairs of pens, feeders, and watering systems.
- Implement advanced biosecurity protocols including fomite decontamination and environmental auditing.
- Serve as a delegate or representative on site committees (e.g., Biosafety, EHSS).
- Train and guide junior staff when delegated by Site Veterinarian or Group Leader.
- May be assigned site management programs (e.g., hazardous shipping, controlled substances).
- Comply with company, USDA, EPA, and AAALAC standards for animal welfare, safety, and scientific integrity.
Required Experience & Skills:
- Experience in animal husbandry, livestock healthcare, veterinary assistance, or animal research.
- Ability to recognize signs of animal distress, illness, and abnormal behavior.
- Strong attention to detail and accurate recordkeeping.
- Ability to restrain and handle animals safely and humanely.
- Comfortable working in extreme environments (hot, cold, noisy, humid).
- Ability to lift up to 70 lbs occasionally and 50 lbs frequently.
- Willingness to work directly with animals during ante-mortem and post-mortem procedures.
- No allergies to animals or feed dust.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (email, word processing).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Sound judgment, analytical thinking, and ability to work both independently and in teams.
- Willingness to learn rapidly and contribute to multidisciplinary research teams.
- Able to maintain composure and focus when working with livestock.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with avian species (not required, but a plus).
- ALAT certification (Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician), or willingness to obtain within 18 months of employment.
Education Requirements:
- Associate’s Degree in Veterinary Technology OR
- Equivalent degree in a related field OR
- 2 years of experience in related areas (e.
g., animal care, livestock handling, veterinary clinical support, scientific research).
