Affton Veterinary Clinic- Carevet, Affton, MO, 63123 Job Summary The Experienced Veterinary Assistant or Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) provides compassionate care to clients and patients. They assist the veterinarian with all aspects of patient care as required by the veterinarian or as assigned by the lead RVT in all areas of the hospital; Treatment, Exam Rooms, and Front Desk. The Experienced Veterinary Assistant or RVT assists veterinarians with in-patient care and daily treatments, and can assist the veterinarian with medical, surgical, and dental procedures. They prepare patients for surgery, administer anesthesia, and monitor patients during surgery and recovery. The RVT can give SQ, IM, and IV injections, review medical records for past medical/vaccine history, and gather patient history from clients. They understand how to calculate drug dosages, fluid rates, oxygen flow rates and concentrations for constant rate infusions, and understand the dosages, usages, and potential side effects of commonly used prescription medications and can explain them to clients. The RVT can perform regional nerve blocks, physical assessments of patients, and can document and report findings to the attending veterinarian. Also helping the front desk team with scheduling appointments, handling medical questions, refilling medications, and answering phones. Medical Responsibilities Assist veterinarians with in-patient care and daily treatments Assist the veterinarian with medical, surgical, and dental procedures Prepare patients for surgery, administer anesthesia, and monitor patients during surgery and recovery Give SQ, IM, and IV injections Review medical records for past medical/vaccine history Gather patient history from clients Calculate drug dosages, fluid rates, oxygen flow rates and concentrations for constant rate infusions Understand the dosages, usages, and potential side effects of commonly used prescription medications and can explain them to clients Perform regional nerve blocks Perform physical assessments of patients and can document and report findings to the attending veterinarian Anesthetize, intubate, and monitor patients while under anesthesia Maintain detailed records of anesthetic events Safely recover patients from anesthetic events, and monitor them throughout the recovery period Safely operate gas anesthesia machines Maintain gas anesthesia machines and know how to troubleshoot problems as they arise Use anesthetic monitors; understands normal patient values and limitations of anesthetic monitoring equipment; knows how to maintain and clean anesthetic monitoring equipment and knows how to troubleshoot problems as they arise Perform venipuncture of jugular, cephalic, and saphenous veins Keep accurate medical records Effectively restrain pets, even when large or difficult Place cephalic and saphenous intravenous catheters, and understands how to maintain and care for intravenous catheters Understand the use and care if IV pumps Effectively triage patients; able to categorize patients as critical, urgent, non-urgent, or stable Perform emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, oxygen therapy, opening airways, intubation, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) according to the hospital protocols and RECOVER guidelines Place bandages Know common disease states and can alert veterinarians when changes occur or when concerns with hospital patients arise Maintain narcotic/controlled drug logs according to DEA guidelines Diagnostic and Laboratory Effectively position for and obtain diagnostic quality radiographs Prepare patients and set-up machines for ultrasound procedures Send records, digital radiographs, and ECGs to specialists for consultation as requested by the attending veterinarian Collect samples for and perform clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, urinalysis, skin scrapings, ear cytologies, and preparation of bacterial culture mediums, fungal cultures Perform cystocentesis Operate and clean laboratory equipment; In house Heska Machines Prepare samples for pick up or shipment to reference laboratories in a timely manner Housekeeping Properly care for all surgical materials, keeps the operating room stocks and prepared for surgery Prepare surgical packs; understands how to wrap and autoclave surgical packs Prepare, stock, and maintain asepsis in the exam rooms, treatment area, and operating room Understand the importance of a clean and orderly facility, does not hesitate to clean and organize as part of the normal job duties Clerical/Customer Care Prepare client invoices for services performed Accurately handle payment transactions Build treatment plans upon the request of a veterinarian Accurately and empathetically communicate treatment plans to clients Prepare prescriptions and non-prescription medications to be dispensed to include counting tablets, entering prescription information into the computer, generating prescription labels and notifying clients by telephone when prescriptions are ready for pickup Admit patients following hospital policy and veterinarian’s written orders Discharge patients based on veterinarian’s orders, ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state Perform follow up phone calls for post-op or recently discharged patients and identify signs of potential complications or need for additional assessment or treatment All Full Time Team Members are eligible for benefits, including: Competitive base pay plus revenue share bonus program!
