A Vet Assistant at a spay/neuter clinic primarily assists the veterinarian during surgical procedures focused on sterilization surgeries, including pre-operative patient preparation, monitoring anesthesia, assisting with surgery, and providing post-operative care, while also performing routine animal handling, record keeping, and maintaining a clean and sanitary surgical environment.

Responsibilities Patient Preparation:

Accurately weigh and record vital signs of animals before surgery. Administer pre-operative medications as directed by the veterinarian. Perform pre-surgical grooming and cleaning procedures. Properly restrain animals during procedures. Prepare surgical site with proper shaving and cleaning.

Surgical Assistance:

Prepare surgical instruments and equipment for sterilization. Assist the veterinarian during spay and neuter surgeries as needed. Monitor anesthesia levels throughout surgery and make adjustments as needed. Monitor vital signs during surgery and alert the veterinarian of any abnormalities.

Post-operative Care:

Monitor recovering animals closely for complications. Administer pain medication and other post-operative medications as directed. Apply bandages or sutures as needed. Provide supportive care to animals during recovery, including SQ fluids if needed.

Clinic Maintenance:

Maintain a clean and sanitized surgical suite, including proper sterilization techniques. Stock surgical supplies and maintain inventory. Clean and disinfect animal cages and treatment areas. Assure proper operation and maintenance of all equipment

Volunteer Communication:

Provide clear and concise information to volunteers regarding pre•and post-operative care instructions. Train volunteers for specific tasks or jobs. Answer volunteer questions about the spay/neuter procedure and address concerns. Direct or assign volunteers to perform in specific areas depending on assessment of skill level

Requirements Education:

High school diploma is mandatory. Completion of a program for Registered Veterinary Technician certification is ideal.

Experience:

Prior experience in a veterinary clinic, particularly with surgery, is preferred.

Technical Skills:

Proficiency in animal restraint, surgical assisting techniques, monitoring anesthesia, and basic wound care.

Communication Skills:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with volunteers and veterinary staff. Must be able to communicate with direct supervisors•Medical Director and/or Clinic Manager and receive instruction from them.

Physical Demands:
