ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

• Assist the veterinarian during ophthalmic examinations, surgeries, and procedures.
• Prepare patients for examinations and procedures, ensuring their comfort.
• Help administer medications and treatments as directed by the veterinarian.
• Monitor patients’ comfort and safety before and after procedures.
• Educate pet owners on eye health, treatment plans, and preventive care.
• Maintain accurate medical records and documentation.
• Ensure a clean and organized clinical environment, adhering to safety and sanitation protocols.
• Collaborate with the veterinary team to provide excellent patient care and client communication.

This includes cross training and support of reception on an as needed basis.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

• Ability to be confident around pets (e.g., cats and dogs)
• Client needs and work volume may require more than 40 hours per week, including occasional weekends and evenings.
• The noise level in the work environment may occasionally be high (e.g., barking dogs).
• Ability to follow instructions in written, oral, or diagram form and to solve problems involving several variables.
• Requires ambulatory ability to perform duties while at the clinic.
• Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb, as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds.
• Requires good hand-eye coordination and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment, and read information.
• Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Veterinary assistants are routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch and may occasionally be exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances.
• As the business expands, travel may be required to new clinic locations.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND/OR TRAINING

• Prior experience as a veterinary assistant or in a related role preferred, but not essential.
• Strong knowledge of small animal veterinary practice preferred; experience in ophthalmology is a plus but not essential.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
• Compassion for animals and a commitment to their welfare.
