Job Description

Weekend Kennel Assistant
Animal Emergency & Specialty Center in Knoxville is seeking a responsible, dedicated, and compassionate part-time Kennel Assistant to join our team. This is a weekend-only position, providing essential support in caring for the animals in our facility. Weekends and certain Holidays are required to fill the needs of this position.
You will work closely with our veterinary staff and other team members to ensure a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for our animal patients. This role is ideal for someone with a love for animals, an eye for detail, and an ability to work independently.

Hourly Wage:

$15-$18 per hour (pending experience)
Some of the responsibilities you will own in this role:

Animal Care & Well-Being:

Feed, water, and provide basic care to animals housed in the kennel area.
Monitor the animals for any signs of illness or distress and report observations to the veterinary team.
Assist in administering medications and treatments as directed by veterinary staff.
Walk and exercise animals as needed, ensuring they receive appropriate physical activity and socialization.

Facility Cleaning & Maintenance:

Maintain cleanliness of the kennel and surrounding areas, including cleaning cages, kennels, and common areas.
Regularly sanitize surfaces, floors, and equipment to ensure a safe and hygienic environment for both animals and staff.
Handle waste disposal and ensure appropriate removal and cleaning protocols are followed.
Assist with laundering towels, bedding, and other linens used for animal care.
Maintain the cleanliness and organization of storage areas for supplies and equipment.
Support with

Animal Intake and Discharge:

Assist in the intake process for new animals, including ensuring proper documentation and setup of their designated spaces.
Assist with the discharge process, ensuring the safe return of pets to their owners and updating records as needed.

Customer Service:

Greet clients and assist with questions or concerns regarding the animals in our care.
Support a positive, compassionate, and professional environment for both animals and their families.

Team Collaboration:

Work collaboratively with the veterinary team, technicians, and other kennel assistants to ensure smooth operations.
Follow instructions from veterinary staff regarding animal care and special needs.
Assist with special projects, including facility improvement or upgrades as needed.

Safety & Emergency Procedures:

Follow all safety protocols when handling animals and cleaning the facility.
Be vigilant in identifying potential hazards or issues that may affect animal safety or well-being.
Remain calm and responsive in emergency situations, assisting staff as needed.

What You’ll Bring:

Must be available to work weekends and holidays, including occasional evenings.
Prior experience with animals (including pets or in a kennel setting) is preferred but not required.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to lift and move animals of various sizes as needed.
Must be reliable, punctual, and maintain a positive, professional attitude at all times.
Physical stamina to handle various tasks such as cleaning, walking, and caring for animals in a fast-paced environment.

About Animal Emergency & Specialty Center – Knoxville
Animal Emergency & Specialty Center of Knoxville is an AAHA Accredited, premier referral and emergency veterinary hospital. We have an emergency and critical care unit that is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We have a variety of board-certified surgeons and specialists at AESC who treat a wide range of veterinary orthopedic, oncology, thoracic, abdominal, and soft-tissue conditions. Our team includes over 20 compassionate and highly trained Licensed Veterinary Technicians, numerous veterinary assistants, other support staff, and supportive administration.
We have the latest specialized surgery and diagnostic instrumentation and equipment including 16-slice CT scanner, Vivid iQ echocardiogram platform, digital radiology, ultrasound systems, fluoroscopy unity, endoscopy, high-def Storz tower with new laparoscopic equipment, Arthrex equipment, LigaSure, Autocon III, Storz Ho-YAG laser, Synthes locking plates, and ESF equipment. In 2025, we will be completing our 20,000-square-foot specialty expansion and we will be adding Neurology, Cardiology, and other specialists to our team, as well as a new MRI scanner, CT scanner, linear accelerator, IR suite with ceiling-mounted fluoroscopy, and surgical suites measuring at least 18′ x 18′.
