Position Summary:

The Animal Research Technician functions under general supervision to support animal research operations in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and institutional policies governing the care and use of laboratory animals. This position may rotate through various animal and support areas and plays a critical role in ensuring the health and well-being of laboratory animals and the cleanliness and maintenance of their environments. This individual will work collaboratively in a team-focused environment and may assist in training other staff, performing quality assurance reviews, and identifying opportunities for program improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform routine and specialized care, enrichment, and observation of laboratory animals. Sanitize and prepare animal cages and facility equipment. Operate and maintain facility equipment, including cage/rack washers and environmental monitoring systems. Accurately document animal health observations and task completion in compliance with SOPs and regulatory standards. Report abnormalities and follow veterinary directives appropriately. Support ongoing training of team members and provide feedback to improve processes. Contribute to evaluation of new technologies and techniques for animal program advancement. Ensure adherence to safety standards and participate in quality control inspections. Work scheduled weekends and holidays as required. Always Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during work activities.

Qualifications:

High School Diploma or equivalent and 2+ years of experience in an animal research facility or veterinary practice. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science or related field preferred. AALAS certification is highly desirable. Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). Must not have known allergies to animals.

Required Skills and Competencies:

Strong attention to detail and follow-up skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-based environment. Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, bend, squat, push/pull, and stand for extended periods. Experience handling and restraining both small and large laboratory animals. #INDBH #LI-DNP
