The current hours will be every Monday-Tuesday 3:30pm-8pm and Sunday 2pm to 8pm. The ideal candidate would also be able to occasionally cover/trade shifts during the week with coworkers as needed. The ability to work holidays is required but they will be split between all staff. This facility is not open to the public and only handles dogs from the Humane Society of North Central Florida. Job Summary The Animal Care Technician is responsible for the daily care and well-being of the animals kenneled at the Humane Society of North Central Florida’s Foster Barn location. The technician will interact with rescue dogs on a daily basis, and provide care and enrichment while performing various tasks as assigned. Individual schedules will vary, but the technician must have availability to work evenings, weekends and holidays. Experience caring for dogs is required, though medical training is not necessary. This position reports to the Foster Barn Manager. Responsibilities and Duties Adhere to the cleaning procedures as detailed in the Standard Operating Procedures and protocols for animal care, kennel maintenance, sanitation, parasite and disease control, and other animal care practices within the policies and guidelines of HSNCFL/Foster Barn Perform the duties as described in the appropriate job assignment description Maintain the animal housing areas and the shelter as a whole in a clean and sanitary condition Observe animals in runs, rooms and cages throughout the day, to see that the animals are safe, healthy, and comfortable, ensuring that each animal has access to clean and dry bedding Feed and administer medications Exercise and enrich the lives of rescue dogs to prepare them for a home environment Promptly notify the Barn Manager or Vet Team if any animal shows signs of stress, injury, or illness Receive and place new animals in a clean cage/run with water, food, and fresh bedding Keep accurate records at all times Maintain a humane and caring attitude at all times towards the animals under HSNCFL care Show interest and motivation towards personal development with regards to animal welfare Represent HSNCFL in a professional manner at all times: in appearance, demeanor, and behavior Demonstrate a low level of absenteeism and lateness as a condition of continued employment Perform other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent required Experience caring for dogs in general required, in a shelter environment preferred. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Must be in good health. Any allergic condition that would be aggravated from exposure or through contact with animals or chemicals used to sanitize facilities, vehicles or equipment, is a disqualification. Must stand, walk, bend and stoop frequently to perform duties. Have the ability to perform prolonged strenuous physical activity, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 40 pounds alone or up to 100 pounds with the help of fellow employees for short distances. Must be able to deal with a changing workload which at times can be stressful. By nature of the job, there is occasional exposure with dead, injured, sick, unruly, vicious, and/or dangerous dogs in addition to exposure to parasites and infectious diseases. Must be available and willing to work such weekends, holidays, overtime, and attend mandatory training and meetings as the employer determines are necessary or desirable
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
Will be a responsible, reliable and confident independent worker. The job will require a reliable transportation vehicle. The majority of the shift will be worked alone, so confidence in your ability to handle the dogs is important. The workplace will have a low-moderate noise level. This job will require moderate to significant physical activity and the applicant should have the ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time, restrain large dogs, bend and kneel and lift at least 40lbs. Additionally, animal care will be performed in all seasons and weather conditions including weekends and holidays. Please be aware that these are shelter animals that may not always be healthy, friendly or cooperative, patience and persistence is key.
