Job Description

Veterinary Technician – Full Time/Part Time Humane Society of North Central Florida 4205 NW 6th Street, Gainesville, FL 32609 Full time, Hourly rate determined based on experience The Humane Society of North Central Florida is a private, non-profit, no-kill animal shelter located in Gainesville, FL. Our mission, through collaborative efforts with area rescues and shelters, is to stop unnecessary euthanasia in North Central Florida. In addition to our mission of ending euthanasia of healthy or treatable animals in our area, Humane Society of North Central Florida strives to be a resource for pet owners in our community. We offer education and outreach for animal owners by providing accessible veterinary services such as spay/neuter and wellness clinics. We are looking for a positive team member who has a passion for animals as well as client and community service. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work closely with Vet Team Manager, veterinarians, and technical team to ensure a high standard of humane care to maintain physical and mental well being of our patients.
  • Triage and perform TPR and basic health evaluations for incoming clinic, shelter, and surgery animals, reporting any health concerns to attending veterinarian.
  • Schedule and complete routine wellness exams and assessments including routine vaccinations, preventatives and surgery evaluations for shelter and foster animals.
  • Administer pre and post-surgical medications, vaccinations, and preparation of patient for surgical procedures, including induction and intubation.
  • Monitor anesthesia and recovery with a clear idea of normal and abnormal conditions.
  • Perform blood draws for in-house diagnostics.
  • Demonstrate humane restraint of animals for exams and procedures.
  • Provide nursing care for sick or post-op patients.
  • Update and maintain medical records in our electronic shelter databases.
  • Maintain inventory for drug log, as well as other on-hand medications and supplies.
  • Train, encourage, motivate and provide positive guidance to shelter assistants and volunteers.
  • Effectively and efficiently communicate with surgical and wellness clients in a competent and friendly manner.
  • Keep clinic rooms, surgical suite, kennels and pharmacy area organized, clean and sanitized.
  • May be called upon to perform other tasks as assigned.
Education and Experience:
  • Extensive knowledge of animals, proper animal husbandry, handling, and diseases of dogs and cats.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and written, including electronic communication via shelter-wide email contact list.
  • Ability to operate veterinary supplies and related equipment routine to the position as veterinary technician, including but not limited to needles, syringes, microscope, centrifuge and autoclave.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, veterinary drugs, data entry, and the ability to perform drug calculations.
  • Proficiency with medical techniques including but not limited to blood draws, fecal floatation, basic cytology, administering medication and fluids, skin-scrapes, sample collection, placement of IV catheters/endotracheal tubes, and basic CPR.
  • Prior experience in an animal shelter and/or high-volume surgical setting preferred.

Candidate should be a team player, self-motivated, flexible, and driven with ability to perform assigned tasks efficiently in a fast-paced, often stressful environment. Strong organization, attention to detail, and effective time management skills are required
