Job Description

Veterinary Technician Animal Refuge Center 18011 Old Bayshore Road, North Fort Myers, FL 33917 Job Summary Maintain clinic inventory: Medical and surgical supplies Pharmaceuticals (including controlled substances) Prescription diets Heartworm and flea/tick preventatives Cleaning/maintenance items Use and maintain clinic equipment: Anesthesia machines X-ray Dental x-ray Dental unit Patient warmers Scale Blood analyzers Ultrasonic instrument cleaner Autoclave Triage and treat illness/injury in general population, perform in-house lab tests and take radiographs when necessary. Communicate with staff and volunteers reporting medical issues. Transfer emergency cases to Islandside Animal Hospital, Blue Pearl Fort Myers or other hospital as directed by Wayne or Rox. Send records and test results with patient. Perform intake exams, blood and fecal tests, vaccinations, microchipping. Bathe and treat flea infested animals. Review medical histories Move animal to appropriate quarantine location after intake. Make cage cards for each animal in clinic; update as needed. Contain contagious animals in isolation wards Manage and treat ringworm cases Ensure proper disinfection protocols are followed Communicate with Dr. Nichols for treatment plans Implement treatment plans Place IV catheters for sick or surgical patients; maintain patients on IV fluids Dispense medications and formulate medication schedules for dog and cat staff Schedule surgeries and exams for vet days; post copy of schedule for staff in advance Coordinate off-site consultations and surgeries including transportation Coordinate visiting doctor consultations and surgeries Oversee care of hospitalized and quarantined animals; perform care duties if assistant is not available or needs help Prepare heartworm/flea & tick meds for each dog and flea/tick meds for each cat house to be dispensed on the first of each month Maintain whiteboard displaying current dog population and recent weights Calculate weight loss plans for obese dogs; weigh regularly to monitor progress Assist dog and cat staff with animal nutrition issues Schedule vaccine boosters Schedule follow up exams, suture removals and rechecks on vet days Dispense medications including flea/tick and heartworm for animals in foster homes. Schedule appointments for fosters, in house and off site. Order prescriptions and refills from compounding pharmacy. Check pharmacy stock periodically to remove items more than 1 year past expiration date and dispose of expired stock properly. Assist veterinarian with exams, spay/neuter, dental or other surgical procedures. Recover patients from surgery/procedures. Make up post op meds and med schedules. Prepare samples for outside lab. Perform medically necessary grooming (de-matting, sanitary clips) Assist veterinarian with euthanasia, make aftercare arrangements, make paw prints for staff and volunteers to memorialize pet. Enter all exams, test results, vaccinations, medication refills, treatments etc… into Pet Point data base. Print rabies vaccination certificates for veterinarian to sign. Take signed copies to adoption center. Complete adoption agreement paperwork for heartworm treatment dogs and give to adoption counselor. Keep management, adoption counselor and staff informed of animals’ medical status and date they will be available for adoption. Meet with sales reps if convenient, check out shelter pricing and promotions. Provide Veterinary Partner handouts for fosters and adopters with information about managing medical conditions; field questions and refer to vet if necessary. Mentor pre-vet student volunteers Qualifications Veterinary technician experience with a strong background in animal handling and care Proficient in veterinary terminology and animal physiology Skilled in animal catheterization, restraint, and anatomy knowledge Experience with dog handling and pet care, including weight loss management Familiarity with kennel operations and dental terminology Relevant skills in dog training, pet grooming, and X-Ray procedures
