This position involves assisting in medical procedures, providing client education, maintaining equipment, and contributing to a clean, organized, and efficient hospital environment. Veterinary Technicians at UAH are compassionate, detail-oriented, and skilled in handling a wide variety of tasks to support the healthcare team. This role requires fluency in both English and Spanish to effectively communicate with our Spanish-speaking clientele and support collaboration within our team. Primary Responsibilities Assist veterinarians in medical, diagnostic, and surgical procedures, including preparing patients, equipment, and instruments. Obtain and accurately record patient histories. Collect, label, and process specimens for laboratory procedures such as hematology, urinalysis, parasitology, and microbiology. Dispense and administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians. Administer fluids, blood products, and anesthesia under the direction of a veterinarian. Monitor patients under anesthesia and provide specialized nursing care for injured or ill animals. Perform diagnostic imaging, including taking and processing digital radiographs. Educate clients on preventive healthcare, treatment plans, and medications, answering questions with empathy and expertise. Provide product education and assist in marketing veterinary services such as dental cleanings, senior wellness programs, spay/neuter procedures, and boarding. Maintain and monitor inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment, and supplies. Clean, sterilize, and maintain instruments, equipment, and materials to ensure a safe and sanitary environment. Ensure compliance with OSHA and DEA regulations, reporting any issues to the hospital manager. Collaborate effectively with all team members to uphold hospital standards and philosophy. Perform other duties as assigned to support hospital operations. Skills and Qualifications Fluent in both English and Spanish (written and verbal). Required to provide clear communication with Spanish-speaking clients and support team collaboration. Strong knowledge of veterinary procedures, instruments, and materials. Proficient in laboratory techniques, diagnostic imaging, and anesthesia monitoring. Familiarity with federal and state animal health laws, including OSHA and DEA compliance. Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to educate and communicate effectively with clients. Ability to work independently while accepting direction from supervisors and veterinarians. Proficiency in computer software for medical record-keeping and inventory management. Physical Requirements Frequently bend, stand, stoop, walk, and move between rooms. Use hands to handle, feel, or manipulate equipment and animals. Safely restrain animals of various sizes and temperaments, including strong and active animals. Frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds; occasionally assist with animals over 150 pounds (team assistance provided). Work Environment Exposure to aggressive animals, infectious diseases, and controlled substances. Exposure to unpleasant odors, loud noises, and animal waste. Adherence to safety protocols is required to minimize risks. Essential Functions Provide compassionate and skilled care to patients, including monitoring anesthesia and administering fluids. Perform accurate laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging. Administer medications and vaccines accurately. Educate clients on healthcare and product usage with professionalism and empathy. Observe and report patient conditions and behaviors, including signs of illness or distress. Maintain accurate and thorough medical records. Collaborate effectively with team members to ensure seamless operations. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential to meet the demands of this position.
