Minimum Qualifications Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience in caring for and handling poultry is preferred. Position Summary This position includes animal care duties to poultry flocks involved in research, as well as the maintenance of animal records and sterilization of equipment. Employee will be assisting Principal Investigators in setting up research trials and monitoring the animal houses/cages so that the environmental elements fall within established Standard Operating Procedures (examples include air quality, temperature, lighting, HVAC, etc.). Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies Prior experience in caring for and handling poultry is preferred. Must have the ability to get along with all faculty and staff. Must be able to follow Departmental Standard Operating Procedures and OSHA guidelines. Prefer someone with experience using high pressure washer and disinfecting equipment. Duties/Responsibilities Duties/Responsibilities Provide animal husbandry duties to poultry flocks, including feed, water, and care. Operate high pressure washer and disinfecting equipment using sterilization techniques, as well as clean cages, rooms, isolation units and equipment in assigned areas following established SOPs. Hatchery duties include setting eggs and monitoring incubators. Percentage of time 45 Duties/Responsibilities Maintain detailed accurate records of animal inventory, egg inventory, feed inventory, house pens, identification tags, cleaning solutions, and care schedules. Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities Monitor room or unit environment for air quality, HVAC, lighting, etc. Make adjustments as established by SOPs and/or specific research protocol. Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities Assist the Principal Investigator with the design and set-up of initial research trials and with establishing protocols necessary to fulfill research initiative. May deal with immuno-compromised chickens and turkeys during research trials.
