Animal Care Technician II University Comparative Medicine Location:

New Orleans, LA Summary
The Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM) supports the research activities of Tulane University faculty, staff, and students by fostering a comprehensive program of quality animal care. The Animal Care Technician II is an intermediate level position that builds skills in providing husbandry and care to a variety of laboratory animals. The ACT II position works under supervision until deemed proficient by the supervisor. Employees in the classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents. Required to work weekend, holiday, and emergency work schedules. This position is considered essential personnel. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to pay attention to detail.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform duties in adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and policies.
  • Ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds and pus items weighing up to 200 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time. Required Education and/or Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years animal husbandry or previous animal care experience.
    OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
    OR
  • Graduation from a two-year veterinary technician program. OR
  • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification and one year animal husbandry or previous animal care experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED ABILITY FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES

Ability to complete and pass successfully the required occupational health screening referenced in the University’s Animal Handler Health Surveillance Program on an annual basis.

REQUIRED BACKGROUND CHECK, PHYSICAL, AND DRUG SCREENING FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES

Selected candidates must complete and pass a background check and an occupational health screening as a condition of employment. For identified jobs, a drug screening will also be required. The background investigation required occupational health screening, and any required drug screening will be conducted after a conditional employment offer has been extended. Compensation Information
This position is classified as “non-exempt, hourly” and is assigned to pay grade 21.
