Part-Time Animal Science Technician 4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 137 South Post Road, Shelby, NC 28152 Rank Lab Assistant Job Description Work up to 28 hours per week (flexible schedule, may include occasional evenings/weekends) Coordinate and participate in the daily care and monitoring of sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, horses, or cattle housed on campus, including feeding/providing water and environmental cleaning Assist in the maintenance of animal health, including routine observation, disease and injury prevention, identification of ill animals, and administration of prescribed treatments Maintain cleanliness and organization of animal housing and barn facilities Support animal health protocols, including observation, recordkeeping, and communication of concerns Assist with student engagement and recruitment efforts, including participating in campus events, career fairs, tours, and hands-on learning experiences Help coordinate and supervise student activities in the barn, including lab sessions and animal check duties Support faculty in planning and preparing for courses, labs, and student projects May teach or co-teach Animal Science courses, as qualified and needed Perform other duties as assigned to support the success of the Animal Science program
Required Qualifications Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent Minimum of 1 year of direct experience working with livestock animals and/or poultry Ability to work independently, follow protocols, and communicate effectively Reliable transportation and ability to work a flexible schedule Willingness to work in an outdoor, hands-on environment with animals Basic computer literacy for recordkeeping and communication
Required Skills and Abilities:
Ability to safely handle and care for livestock and poultry, including feeding, cleaning, and monitoring animal health and behavior Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, and the public Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and follow established protocols with minimal supervision Must be able to perform physical labor in outdoor conditions, including lifting up to 50 lbs, standing for extended periods, and working in a variety of weather conditions Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, and staff to support program goals and student success Basic computer skills, including email, spreadsheets, and simple digital recordkeeping; ability to learn and use campus systems as needed Willingness and ability to assist with student instruction and engagement activities, both in the classroom and hands-on learning environments Ability to respond calmly and appropriately to unexpected situations involving animals, students, or facilities Preferred Qualifications Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or higher in Animal Science, Agricultural Science, or related field Extensive experience managing multiple livestock species and poultry Experience working in an educational setting, especially with community college or high school students Experience teaching or assisting with instruction in higher education or agricultural education programs Strong organizational and interpersonal skills Salary Range Based on education and experience.
